Turns out that a build of pax-exam fails with exactly the same problem during unit tests. Digging deeper.

Upgrading to 1.8.5 while downgrading the swissbox dependency makes the ClassNotFound problem go away; but that's all; it now fails the same way 1.8.4 fails ("org.ops4j.pax.exam.TestContainerException: start level 5 has not been reached within 180000 ms").
