Apache SDK to Flash Builder - next steps

Skinning of the app is now complete. Thanks to Tink and Tomasz for doing
all the hard work - it was a breeze integrating it into the app.

What now?

*1. Beta testing* *+ bug fixing*
We need as many people as possible to download and test this out. If you
are reading this email, that means you :-)
The source code is available here:
https://github.com/bigosmallm/MakeApacheFlexForFlashBuilder
Carol, can please you host the .air, .exe and .dmg downloads on your page?
Or please suggest a better location?

*2. Install badge*
I am planning work on a badge installer that would

1. Detect if AIR 3.2 is installed
2. If yes, allow download the flex packager app as an AIR file
3. If not, allow download of the flex packager as an .exe or a .dmg file
depending on the platform.
4. The badge size I am planning is: 300x300
5. Publish html code that will let anyone embed the badge installer on
their blog, facebook, linkedin pages, etc.

Tomasz, can you please make a nice looking badge design for web
deployment? Assets as .pngs are good.

*3. Integration with main build*
Someone with commit permissions needs to help with this. Justin, can you
please take a look? ;-)

Thanks,
Om

I'll give it a good workout on OSX.

Do we need to update the paths in the XML config file?

I can help out with once we ready to commit it.

Sure, but we're out of the office for another long weekend so I'll get back
to it on Monday.

Hi,

Not that I'm aware of.

Due to changes in the Apache Flex SDK directory structure (mostly to do with licensing ie we are unable to include them) we need a way of packing up the SDK so it can be used by IDEs like Flash Builder which expect certain files to be in certain places.

Thanks,
Justin

Just to clarify, it will only be guaranteed to support Flex up through
Adobe's last release, 4.6.

Adobe has publicly stated that they will continue to make a version of
Flash Builder for the coming future. It is very easy to infer that they
will continue to charge for the IDE, as they have in the past. It won't be
Flex specific -- rather it will be targeted towards ActionScript developers
(it will still support Flex, however).

The packager while initially targeted at FB should also work with all the other IDEs as they expect the same files/directory structure that FB expects. If you (or anyone else) who uses other IDE can please give the packager a go and see if it works. We do want to support all IDEs not just FB.

We have to do this because software used by the Flex SDK (ie the Adobe AIR SDK and playerglobal.swc) can't be legally included in an Apache release. A user friendly AIR app seemed a better way of doing that than a ant or shell script.

> Adobe *MUST* change Fb to be Apache Flex SDK compliant and not the inverse!
I agree. Which is why I was surprised about that extra FlashBuilder specific XML file being checked into the SDK the other day.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

it sounds really weird for me that community (non-payed effort) will be
spending time packaging the sdk to work with the "old school"
implementation of a payed effort (aka Adobe Flash Builder). Adobe will put
their own effort to work with the new SDK, the same as Intellij, FDT, and
other IDEs out there. This is, for me, the world upside down...

Adobe *MUST* change Fb to be Apache Flex SDK compliant and not the inverse!

Did you see something like this before in other open source projects?

It used to be included in CS Web Premium. Now Web and design premium have been combined...
Result : out with Flash Builder, in with InDesign - for me, a totally useless swap
That said, it wasn't always in a suite.

With CS6 it's only included Master Collection not Web Collection (unlike CS5). Initially it wasn't in creative cloud either but it now may of been added?

Looks like even Adobe employees are confused about it :-)

I don't know what Adobe is planning in regards to Flash Builder but I'd guess it will be out in 6 months.

Given the last 4.5 -> 4.6 upgrade was free and I can't see too many new features in 4.7 I'd expect the upgrade to be low cost or free. But I could be way off on both accounts.

Flash Builder is no longer a part of creative suite which I think is unfortunate.

Adobe have spoken about Monocle a new way of profiling Flash (and I assume Flex) applications so perhaps we'll see that in the next version of Flash Builder?

Thanks,
Justin

Hi Guys,

Pardon my ignorance, but does this mean that Apache Flex dev community is working on an IDE for Flex (Flash Builder or something similar) too??? If yes, is this the same Flash Builder IDE that Adobe is going to donate to Apache?

Thanks much,

Two versions of install badge.
http://clients.fusecollective.com/flex/flex_sdk_builder_badge_v1.jpg
http://clients.fusecollective.com/flex/flex_sdk_builder_badge_v2.jpg

V1 is consistent with look of the app so it's my recommendation to use
that one. Let me know how you want assets and I'll attach them to JIRA.
If you want to use one of the badge makers (or use template) it will
look fine too. From what I can tell they will have different install
button and bigger dark stroke. I can prepare 300x300 png without install
button and stroke so you can use it as bg.

Hi Om,

just gave 1) a whirl and tried to compile the source in Flash Builder
but it fails because the
org.apache.flex.packageflexsdk.model.ActivityStepVO cannot be found.

Looking at the source, the org.apache.flex.packageflexsdk.model
package is missing completely:
