Finally CouchDB 1.6.0 PPAs are available for Ubuntu Precise (LTS) again. It turns out that despite the labrynthine documentation for Ubuntu, this is embarrassingly easy to do. https://launchpad.net/~couchdb/+archive/ubuntu/stable has the details.
