Do a CVS checkout of the Excalibur CVS.
Merlin 2 is container in the assembly subdirectory.  I've just moved 
container neutral parts of Merlin into the excalibur/meta and 
excalibur/container packages.  Javadoc is complete for all packages. 
 Also, the excalibur/assembly packages contains a bunch of demonstrations.

You can checkout the very latest merlin information here -
