foreign characters in the mask for validation?

Hello,
	I am wondering how foreign characters could be included in the mask in 
validation.xml file for pattern matching later. Right now I have 
'[a-zA-Z]', but it does not allow sth that comes from French or Latin. Has 
anyone had this experience before? Any help is appreciated.
