how do I set Xalan-J to preserve space?

Xerces 1.0.3 has a method in its OutputFormat class which allows to
setPreserveSpace. How do I set the same value to true in Xalan. I've
looked in the XSLTProcessor and XMLParserLiaisonDefault classes and I
can't find anything of the sort... does xalan do it by default (doesn't
seem like it though).
