Component extension

Folks,
 
Given the integration happenings with T-4.1, I wanted to get feedback on decision on Component extension.
 
I would like to get as much bang for the buck when developing a Component ... 
 
Is it more practical to develop a Component as an extension of DojoWidget ?
 
Your feedback and isight to this is appreciated.
 
Just looking for current best practices.
