   @richardstartin  sure let's do this. I don't think this PR will be helpful in restoring since code is pretty old. So I suggest taking a fresh take at it from scratch. 
   
   May be we can discuss a little bit on how to store the endianess in metadata to be able to read both old and new indexes or conversion during segment preprocessor ?
