how to start CVS version of Xindice?

subj. there is no any startup script, and it seems that old one (from the
1.0 release) does not work...

You need to have a cvs client available on your system.
I use the cvs executable supplied with cygwin on win32 and it works fine.

The command line commands I use are:

cvs -d:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.apache.org:/home/cvspublic login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.apache.org:/home/cvspublic co xml-xindice

That will checkout the latest cvs version of xindice into the directory tree
rooted at ./xml-xindice. When prompted for a password hit return.

Cvs is avaliable for other platforms and in other forms as well.

See, for example,
http://www.wincvs.org
http://www.cvshome.org
http://www.jcvs.org
http://javacvs.netbeans.org/library
http://www.smartcvs.com

etc...

I wrote an article about Xindice that will get published shortly. In the
article I detail how to install and run Xindice, either birthday version
or the current one at CVS.

If you feel that there is _any_ important piece of information on
Xindice that deserves publishing, please let me know and I will gladly
include it in my article.

AFAIK it's in the directory where you started Xindice. But this should
be configurable IMO.

About Xindice and Tomcat: is there a really simple step by step example
on how to use Xindice with Tomcat? I also think that it could be
somewhere in the documentation. If anyone has such documentation,
please feel free to share it :-)

Yep, I am. Since I was fiting for the last 54 hours with xml-rpc filter @
Xindice 1.0 (utf-8 enc.) - I am now :)
Well, in my case (w2k, jdk 1.4) database dir is at C:\Documents and
Settings\moedusa <- its mei:)\Main menu\Programs\Apache Tomcat 4.0\db
well, that is because I start Tomcat from quick launch bar (that one near
start button) and it seems that Xindice uses it as initial dir (?) (though
tomcat itself is at d:\Tomcat).

Yes. its COOL! This changes are very impressive. I feel it opens much more
interesting possibilities (well, my English is too poor to explain)
Phil.

P.S. I'll try 1.1 and I will report on what I'll face with to this list, may
be it will be interesting to Rodolfo M.Raya and others.

Alright Philipp, you're the excitable type huh? :)

The database is created at relative to the $TOMCAT_HOME directory ( or
where you ran it from? ). It should be the ./db directory. The command
line tools should work fine with the XindiceServlet system, it
essentially goes against: xmldb:xindice://localhost:8080/db
which translates to the webapplication at: http://localhost:8080/Xindice

cool?

DAMN! it works! boys and girls, it gonna make me mad. I mean my "nonsence
try" was succesful. somehow. I do not know the details, sorry, but it looks
like xindice itself is working inside container. XindiceServlet - never
mind. Even if it does not work, you can use xindice command line tool to
view and create collections. The question is WHERE it stores created
collection... my father is harry potter...

Ok! That's no problem, just a fresh experience, you know. I've compiled it
and started (huh... an error at XindiceServlet doGet:205
(res.setContentLength (resultString.length());). Well, yes, it seem a little
bit strange for the first time. For example, I even have no idea how to
create a database, and import documents there... I'll try to fix the servlet
now, and (some kinda nonsence try, but now i see nothing impossible) try to
use command tool... oh. I should change the way I think about databases now.
Thank you, Fernando!

Re: how to start CVS version of Xindice?

I'm sorry for the lack of information Philipp. At the moment the best
place for information is the codebase itself and the handful of active
developers and users. I would be extremely overjoyed if someone that was
more inclined toward generating documentation got involved.

But for now, don't feel strange about using Xindince as a web-app. All it
does is that it creates a webapp Xindice.war that when loaded into a web
container (like tomcat) exposes an instance of the database through an
HTTP based XML-RPC, instead of the standalone CORBA exposed system we used
to use.

It's really what all of these server/servlet frameworks are meant to be
used for, a way to code up a the core logic of a server without worrying
about all of the nitty-gritty.

This architecture is much better then what we had before for a few
reasons. But we can discuss that later, maybe with someone taking notes.
:)

!!!!!! Where can I get more information? I feel strange about using Xindice
as a web-app... Anyway, does it shutdown correctly, when using Xindice as a
webapp? So, there is no standalone server now...

AW: how to start CVS version of Xindice?

there are only two ways to use the xindice now:

1. build it with "ant war" and at the xindice.war to a tomcat as
webapplication.

2. use it as embedded with your application
try:

Collection myCol =
DatabaseManager.getCollection("xmldb:xindice-embed:///db/");
