[DISCUSS] Graduation
Hey everybody,
I want to start a discussion around graduation. We've been in incubation
for two years. We've done three releases, added eleven committers and
produced a great beta with a huge number of community contributions. I
think we're ready. What do you think?

Just a heads up, as this is marked a discuss thread we aren't counting
votes, but its great to see all of the enthusiasm!
I think that Drill had become a strong and stable project that has a lot to
offer Apache as a top level project. Our developers have written
enhancements to several of our dependencies currently in incubation, most
notably Optiq and Parquet, which shows a commitment to the success of the
Apache foundation as a whole.
Our last few releases have shown our commitment to the Apache process and
due diligence on upholding established policies.
With these considerations I think we should definitely make a case the
foundation for graduation.
Great work everyone so far, let's keep up the pace for a strong 1.0!

I'll write up the charter and start the PPMC vote based on it (items 3+4)

Looking more closely at things, I think we actually need to complete 2-4
before 1 based on what other projects have done. (I think this is slightly
inconsistent with something I read but lets follow convention). How wants
to help out on 2 & 3 so I can start the vote for 4?
thanks,
Jacques

Re: [DISCUSS] Graduation
Posted by Jacques Nadeau <ja...@apache.org>.
This is very positive feedback. I'm glad we all agree! :)
I believe next steps are as follows:
1. Start a discussion on the incubator-general list
2. Update the drill status xml file to accurately represent the current
state of the community
3. Create a project charter document
4. Complete a PPMC vote
5. Complete a IPMC vote
>From there, we can work through some additional steps that can be read
about here [1]
I'd love some help on items 2 and 3 from other committers. I can start
item one above. Once discussion seems to have gone well, I will start the
vote on this list.
Thanks,
Jacques

Re: [DISCUSS] Graduation
Posted by Aditya <ad...@gmail.com>.
Like others have said, I also believe that we as an open source community
have come a long way since the time Drill was incubated as an Apache
project and have strongly demonstrated that as an ASF an incubator podling,
Drill
* Is a worthy and healthy project;
* Truly fits within the ASF framework;and
* "gets" the Apache Way.
Since inception to its first code drop to last few beta releases, the
community has collaborated with ever increasing enthusiasm at each of these
stages and for many of us, who picked up bits and pieces of ASF philosophy
on the way, it has been one hell of a ride.
Let's sail together towards graduation, which would be one among many
milestones we would be crossing in coming future.

With the increased community engagement and progress made in terms of
features and frequent releases, it would be a good time to graduate.

It is time. Past time, actually.
The key criteria for graduation are:
- ability to cut Apache grade releases (check)
- ability to follow Apache norms and work together (check)
- demonstrated ability to build community (check)
Drill is ready for prime time.

Full-fledged Apache Project status gives us more credibility with partners and customers. Moreover, it conveys a level of maturity in the open-source space that can only help Drill and MapR.

The project has made tremendous progress in both functionality and process and has demonstrated the ability to do things the 'Apache way'. It's one of the more active Apache projects already.
