Re: [DISCUSS] Propose Usergrid for Graduation

Sorry for the delayed response.

I was waiting for after the 1.0.2 release to join this discussion and now
that 1.0.2 is going out to the mirrors, I think we are ready to propose
graduation. We should figure out the next steps and move quickly towards a
graduation vote.

This goes into it a little bit [1], but realistically its generally counted
as:

- Where are the committers coming from, company wise?
- Is there a robust enough PMC being voted in that allows for independence?

I believe some of the concerns have been because of recent issues in a few
TLPs where you ended up with too many active members being from a single
company, as a result the needs of that company were served before the needs
of the rest of the community. I tried explaining this, not too
successfully, to someone recently, trying to say that the ASF isn't here to
fill any specific company's needs and cannot be swayed to obeying the needs
of a company. What this really means is that the ASF isn't here to host
the source code and provide dev tools to Apigee, and likewise hopes that
they don't get TLPs that are solely Apigee employees.

This becomes more abundant when you look at the Yahoos, LinkedIns of the
world. They're not doing this for a profit on the software side, but the
same rules apply here.

Re: [DISCUSS] Propose Usergrid for Graduation

Posted by Rod Simpson <ro...@rodsimpson.com>.
I agree that diversity in this sense seems like a high bar for new projects.  You can’t make people become committers.

So I wonder: have we embraced the Apache way?  Have we been helpful / encouraging for new users? Do we answer questions promptly? Have we made download/install/compile/run/write new code/submit said code instructions clear?

To me it seems that we have done a pretty good job with all of these things.  We monitor this mailing list, we run a public chat room, we answer questions on Stack Overflow, and we even have a pretty significant Google group.

While there may be room for improvement, it seems to me that we have done a pretty decent job of making the project accessible to anyone who is interested.

The issue seems to come down to is diversity of committers not a

Re: [DISCUSS] Propose Usergrid for Graduation

Posted by Dave <sn...@gmail.com>.
In this context, I think diversity means that the committers are from a
variety of organizations and employers. Having this diversity helps to
ensure that if one organization completely stops Usergrid development, the
project still has enough people interested in contributing to carry on.

For Usergrid, we have a diverse committer/PPMC list, but the majority of
work is done by committers from one company. That is not ideal, but it is
typical of new ASF projects. From my point of view, the whole point of
being at the ASF is to build that diverse community -- and I think the
Usergrid committers understand that. The incubator is just the start.

Can someone define “diversity”? In this context, I mean.  I have not read other threads.

I've been watching the whole diversity thread on the Incubator list and there does seem to be some polarized opinions. I think it would be useful to review the recent commentary around other proposed graduations to see how we fare regard to that as well as the other issues.

Re: [DISCUSS] Propose Usergrid for Graduation

Posted by Dave <sn...@gmail.com>.
Awesome!

I think we should put Todd down as the PMC Chair and move ahead with the
gradation vote.

Anybody opposed to that?

Dave

Re: [DISCUSS] Propose Usergrid for Graduation

Posted by Todd Nine <to...@gmail.com>.
Hey guys,
Sorry for the delay, I've been on vacation in the mountains with no
internet and no cell phone, it was great!

I'll gladly volunteer for the Usergrid PMC Chair role. Dave has done a
fantastic job leading us through the Apache process during incubation, and
I would like to assist in this process as the project matures. I feel
taking this role on would be the next step in my Apache membership
evolution.

Thoughts?

Todd

Re: [DISCUSS] Propose Usergrid for Graduation

Posted by "John D. Ament" <jo...@apache.org>.
If Todd's interested, we should hold a vote. We should probably hold a
vote regardless.

We can also plan to practice the common pattern of rolling PMC chairs. Its
a boring job, but someone has to do it. By rotating periodically (e.g.
annually) we're keeping it a chore for a year only.

I'm willing to serve as PMC Chair unless Todd wants this.

Todd: please read up on this thread an respond so we can move ahead with
graduation. This is the one about the PMC Chair:

Agree that Todd or Dave are great candidates. Of course, it's not a draft, so need to see who actually wants it.

Now that I have updated the project status page (usergrid.xml) to include
all committers and their users (
http://incubator.apache.org/projects/usergrid.html -- not sure why it has
not updated yet), I believe we are ready to move ahead with graduation.

Graduation to a top level project requires:
- a charter for your project
- a positive community graduation VOTE
- a positive IPMC recommendation VOTE
- the acceptance of the resolution by the Board
(link: http://incubator.apache.org/guides/graduation.html#process)

I have put together a DRAFT charter here:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-usergrid/blob/master/tlp-resolution.txt

To complete the charter we need to decide who will be the Project
Management Committee (PMC) chair, aka VP Apache Usergrid. This person will
be the ASF Board of Directors eyes and ears on the project and will be
responsible for writing the project status report every couple of months,
ensuring that Apache policies are being followed and when appropriate
raising issues to the attention of the board. The chair has no special
authority to make technical decisions or direct the project.

So, for discussion:

* Are we really truly ready to gradate?

* What else do we need to do before we graduate?

* Should we ask all committers if they want to remain in project? (we
haven't heard from some in a while, and one does not have an account)

* Nominations for PMC chair?

* Any other concerns? Mentors?

Thanks,
Dave
