Strange problem with permissions

Hello.

Today I have discovered strange problems with permissions on our mirror
server:

-rw------- 1 mirrors mirrors 833 Oct 18 10:39 httpd-2.2.17.tar.gz.asc
-rw------- 1 mirrors mirrors 11575720 Oct 18 10:39
httpd-2.2.17-win32-src.zip
-rw------- 1 mirrors mirrors 850 Oct 18 10:39
httpd-2.2.17-win32-src.zip.asc
-rw------- 1 mirrors mirrors 1338741 Aug 31 15:00 httpd-2.3.8-deps.tar.bz2

Apache is running as apache user, so it couldn't access these files (not
only these ones, there are lot of such files).
Is it okay? Or should I change permissions after sync?

I checked some other mirrors including backup sites and everywhere these
files are accessible.

Thank you in advance.

I am totally agree with you about not running rsync client as root.
Actually I normally run the rsync client to sync with master server
with user and group ID 'Nobody'. As there is no user with User/Group
on my mirror, it shows the default User ID '511' in numeric value.

My own opinion is not to change any permission or owner shop which we
receive from Master Mirror. Actually the owner value showing on ls -l
command is not big deal. If I create an user, say the name of user is
bdserver with User and Group '511' then ls -l command will show
something like

dxw-r-r bdserver bdserver 451 <date modifyed> TIMES

Actually I am writing this email to send my Thanks to Mr. James as he
remind all of apache member that 'running rsync in root is not a good
idea'.

Cheers & Keep The Apache Project Running. I hope and believe that
Apache will not be 2nd on world wide web server software market (Who
use website hosting there site). M$ is fighting and expending their
hough money to take the market under control. But we, the dedicated
developers of Apache HTTPD Server Software Developer is more talented
then M$'s Highly Paid Developers. We might not have that much money to
expense to advertise our product, but we have strong team of
developer, lots of volunteer to ready to do any kind of job to improve
Apache and A Big Network of Mirror Servers (Including Hardware, Power,
Bandwidth) Denoted to Project to keep the software best in performance
and absolutely free to user!

Best Wishes to All of Our Apache Family Members.

Well it's not a good idea to run the rsync client as root anyway...

Ours runs as the user that has write permissions to our FTP mirrors area.

Apache Official Mirror Carry Files with ownership of user ID 511. As I
have no user with ID 511, ls -l command show me direct 511. Please see
bellow:

> So maybe developers set up such permissions and it mean something?
> Does anybody keep files with some other owner then apache?
A snapshot of ls -l of my Apache Mirror in Bangladesh:

drwxrwsr-x 4 511 511 4096 Jul 10 13:01 abdera
drwxrwsr-x 6 511 511 4096 Jun 11 2009 activemq
drwxrwsr-x 9 511 511 4096 Jul 26 21:47 ant
drwxr-sr-x 4 9997 511 4096 Oct 18 16:39 apr
drwxrwsr-x 4 511 511 4096 Jun 18 08:20 archiva
-rw-r--r-- 1 508 511 11 Nov 23 19:19 DATE

And I sync with option '-avuzH' which preserve all permission. I am
syncing from rsync.apache.org (140.211.11.131). If you sync from same
server, check the IP address of rsync.apache.org from your location.

Hello.

The thing is I didn't change any permissions by myself.
So I have the same permissions as on official Apache server but another
owner (mirrors in my case).
So maybe developers set up such permissions and it mean something?
Does anybody keep files with some other owner then apache?

The Apache Foundation's Mirror Guideline on URL:

http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html

Tell to use:

rsync -rtlzv --delete rsync.apache.org::apache-dist /local/path/to/mirror

So What we will do ?

Exactly, why people have to make it hard and not follow the mirror

option "a" includes "p" which preserves permissions. That might be
your problem. The permissions are set on the files according to the
file permissions on the server. Try the one suggested earlier, i.e.,
-rtlvz

what rsync command are you running to sync the files with ?

the suggested -rtlzv should work.

Re: Strange problem with permissions

Hi

Is it still showing this wired permission. If yes, please check from
where you are doing the sync.

In my mirror:

 ls -la
total 532
drwxrwsr-x 92 511 511 4096 Nov 20 11:19 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Nov 17 12:49 ..
drwxrwsr-x 4 511 511 4096 Jul 10 13:01 abdera
drwxrwsr-x 6 511 511 4096 Jun 11 2009 activemq
drwxrwsr-x 9 511 511 4096 Jul 26 21:47 ant
drwxr-sr-x 4 9997 511 4096 Oct 18 16:39 apr
drwxrwsr-x 4 511 511 4096 Jun 18 08:20 archiva
drwxrwsr-x 5 511 511 4096 Oct 15 00:38 avro

And I am sync from "rsync.apache.org::apache-dist", the master mirror
of Apache Foundation.

Hi,

Don't exactly know why this happens on your server but all of my mirror
sync scripts do a chmod -R after syncing...So I'm sure files always have
the right permissions...
