Utilizing the Script Update Processor

The documentation here:

Provides an example using the Script Update processor. When accessing the script, the example includes reference to it in the parameters.

My question is, is this the only way to utilize the processor? Do you always have to include it in the parameters, or can you configure the handler in solarconfig.xml such that the script is always called without the added parameter? If so, how would that be configured in solarconfig.xml?

I attempted to add the scripting module as described here by adding    <str name="modules">SOLR_MODULES=scripting</str> in solr.xml

but got the following error message when I attempted to start:
