That could be an explanation if it wasn't that I have been using James
without any <gateway> tag for years and as long as I stay on version
2.2.0a15 I can still send mails (this mail is not sent through the gateway).

Is this something new? My ISP is TDC too and I had previously
successfully sent mail without using the gateway.
Some months ago I too reconfigured James to send thru the
gateway, and the (very few) dns errors I had went away.
So, Marc, I strongly suggest that you try the gateway solution.
Best regards

I did an nslookup on antenna.nl and sun.inform.dk, and deOliveira.dk
indeed seems to be configured correctly. I also see that you are using
TDC as your ISP for this domain. Maybe, then your problem is not related
to DNS but rather to the fact that TDC requires that all outgoing
messages are relayed through their mailservers. Port 25 is closed for
all other destinations with TDC ADSL (to avoid spammer abuse of private
machines). Please ensure that your config.xml contains something similar to
<mailet match="All" class="RemoteDelivery">

You are right. It is ok now (it wasn't before) also if you try the web site
sun.inform.dk you get a message saying that the server is temporarely
unavailable.

Yes, it did not make any difference to have both servers. My mailet.log
lookslike this:

I got your mail twice, on the James 2.2.0a15, but I believe that the
reception is working ok on the RC1 also.

Thanks, I am ready.
Btw, I am not sure if it makes any difference but the marc@dylan.dk address
that I am trying to send to is an external mail account that is setup to
forward the mail back to my server as marc@deoliveira.dk.

dnsjava and java.net are resolving differently, but I think there is
something odd with your server setup, and would like to know why dnsjava
isn't finding a good DNS server to use when we use org.xbill.DNS.Address to
resolve. I have a current belief, which we're about to test.
The attached program uses a variety of methods for resolving DNS
information. I have a strong expectation as to what the results will be,
but I want to see them from your system. Please run it several times in a
row.
You don't need to provide any parameters this time. It is hard-coded to
look up dylan.dk against your default name server, the servers that you
originally gave me, and some others that came up on this thread. Just make
sure to that dnsjava-1.6.2.jar is in its classpath, as you have been doing
with -cp.

Oh? Why are they still listed? Also, when I run

I get good responses. Similarly with nslookup on Windows:

My guess is that this is related to why you don't get a lookup for your own
domain when you don't specify which DNS server to use. I am testing this by
blindcopying your @dylan.dk address, and sending through my own James
server.
I spent time corresponding with Brian last night, and have some additional
test code. Will clean it up for your test case, and send it.

Jens, I am not sure that I understand what you are saying. Is there any
evidence that the official deoliveira.dk DNS servers (antenna.nl etc) are
not configured correctly? And how is this related to the DNS servers I
choose to use in my config.xml?

Marc,
Three different ISPs is no problem DNS-wise. The requirement is that
your domain (deOliveira.dk) is configured correctly on its official DNS
servers. The official DNS servers are those registered by (in case of
the dk top level domain) DK-Hostmaster.

Marc,
It seems that your DNS servers are not ns2.netsite.dk and ns.netsite.dk.
This might be the reason that the IP addresses are working and the DNS
hostnames do not.
Your real DNS servers are antenna.nl and sun.inform.dk. If you really
want to use the netsite.dk servers, you will have to redelegate the
domain deOliveira.dk with DK-Hostmaster.
You can verify your name servers with this link

I never get that exception. Sounds like a local configuration problem,
although it is interesting that Sun and dnsjava behave differently (which
accounts for the difference between a15 and RC1). Is that the same system
running James?

Marc,
OK, something seems wrong. The test code I sent you just comparing results
from org.xbill.DNS and java.net.
When I run one of dnsjava's built-in demonstration programs, which is a dig
work-alike:
$ java -cp dnsjava-1.6.2.jar dig @193.162.153.164 www.deOliveira.dk
I get very inconsistent results. Similarly for the other DNS server you
said you were given to use. And the same is true looking up the DNS
information for dylan.dk. If I run it as just
$ java -cp dnsjava-1.6.2.jar dig www.deOliveira.dk
I get the expected results everytime. I am wondering if there is something
odd going on with those DNS servers.

Oh gosh ... sorry.
Windows, right? Look wherever you have installed James, find the work\
directory, e.g.,
C:\james\work\james-1082411155789\SAR-INF\lib
and find dnsjava-1.6.2.jar. Copy it someplace convenient, e.g., C:\.
Adjust these accordingly:
c:\>path="c:\program files\j2sdk1.4.1\bin";%path%
c:\>javac -classpath .;c:\dnsjava-1.6.2.jar IP.java
c:\>java -cp .;c:\dnsjava-1.6.2.jar" IP www.deOliveira.dk.
When I run it, I get:
dnsjava finds www.deOliveira.dk. is at /80.62.45.38
dnsjava finds Host Name 0x503e2d26.boanxx8.adsl-dhcp.tele.dk
Java finds www.deOliveira.dk. is at www.deOliveira.dk./80.62.45.38
Java finds Host Name www.deOliveira.dk.
I added an extra couple of print messages. I also sent Brian Wellington a
note about the difference.

The code in James that generates that message is:
try
{
ip = org.xbill.DNS.Address.getByName(hostIP);
}
catch (java.net.UnknownHostException uhe)
{
log("Cannot resolve address for " + hostIP + ": " + uhe.getMessage());
}
I took that code, added a main, and it works fine.
$ java -cp .:path/to/dnsjava-1.6.2.jar IP www.deOliveira.dk.
www.deOliveira.dk. is at /80.62.45.38
I have received the same error on my server, but quite legitimately. I
received an e-mail from an @oldies1041.com address. The MX record for that
domain is:
oldies1041.com. 2403 IN MX 10 mx1.bungo.com.
but mx1.bungo.com does not resolve. Basically, they have a broken zone
file. However, this does not explain the problem you are encountering.
Please try the attached test program, which you must compile against
dnsjava, and let me know what happens.

You're right! My XP server renamed it to james.sar.zip when I saved it. I
will try the test again right away.

Mark, I didn't upload a zip file. I placed a james.sar file to replace the
one in your apps/ directory. Download
http://www.apache.org/~noel/james.sar.

I just opened the zip file and copied the content to \apps\james\. This
would overwrite the config.xml so I replaced it with the one I made. It
sounds like I am not doing it right...

You would just replace the .sar file. It will not overwrite your config
changes, since Phoenix won't overwrite config files.

Ok, something is odd there. The code changed, so that the log statement is:
log("Cannot resolve address for " + hostIP + ": " + uhe.getMessage());
and I don't see the "for ...:" part in that message. I just unpacked the
jar file, and verified that the revised string is present in the .class
file.

Is it ok to just replace the config.xml that you uploaded with the one I

OK, I want back to your original message. Something from that one didn't
catch my eye at first. You wrote:
19/04/04 10:43:44 INFO James.Mailet: SenderInFakeDomain: Cannot resolve
address: unknown host
That is a different error than I thought you were seeing, and I should
change the log message to give us additional information. Fortunately, the
logic in that code would not impact delivery.
I am still bothered by:
19/04/04 10:43:44 INFO James.Mailet: RemoteDelivery: Temporary exception
delivering mail (Mail1082364224140-0-to-dylan.dk:
javax.mail.MessagingException: There are no DNS entries for the hostname
dylan.dk. I cannot determine where to send this message.
But am hoping that cleaning up the first will lead to resolving the second.
If you want to give it a shot, http://www.apache.org/~noel/james.sar is the
same as RC1 but with a more elaborate log message for the first case above.
I'm going to run it on my server to check, too.

SenderInFakeDomain and RemoteDelivery used to use the JVM's address
resolution mechanism for resolving A records. Now they use dnsjava, which
means that the DNS server entries must be configured properly.
What are the two DNS server entries that you are using now?

Got it. Thanks, Noel.
The James service is now running on RC1 but all outgoing mails are left in
the outgoing folder leavĂng a message in the mailet.log saying:

I have seen on the list that this usually has to do with the DNS setting but
I have copied the two DNS servers from my Jamse 2.2.0a15 config.xml to the
new RC1 config.xml.
I am now back to 2.2.0a15 to be able to send this mail... :-(
Can anybody tell me where to look for the problem?
Sincerely,
Marc

All of those files are packed in james.sar. You must run James once to
unpack those files.
You want to unpack the binary distribution into a new directory, run James
once to unpack the configuration, then stop James and merge any
customization from your existing configuration files with the new ones.
When you are ready, you can move the old apps/james/var directory to the new
structure.

Which zip archive? I just ran:
find . -name "*.zip" -exec /usr/local/java/bin/jar tf {} \; | grep apps
on my local copy, and found:
james-2.2.0RC1/apps/dummy.txt
james-2.2.0RC1/apps/james.sar
in both .zip archives for the binary release. There isn't any in the source
release; developers are expected to either download the binaries separately,

I am having problems installing RC1. It looks like some files are missing
from the .zip archive. Ie there is nothing under the apps folder. When
copying the missing files from my version a15 James will not start.
