Example apps and Avalon

I'm using Debian Linux, the sid distro, with kernel
2.4.18, Tomcat 4.0.3, JDK 1.3.1_03 from Sun, and
Velocity velocity-1.3-rc1 which I compiled using Ant.
All of the above software was installed from packages
instead of compiling from source, except Velocity. I
also ran ``ant test`` and ``ant examples``. All the
tests passed. I moved the forumdemo and SampleServlet1
examples to my webapps directory. Trying to access any
servlet in those contexts yields:

2002-04-18 16:01:55 StandardWrapperValve[invoker]:
Servlet.service() for servlet invoker threw exception
javax.servlet.ServletException: Error initializing
Velocity: java.lang.Exception: Unable to configure
AvalonLogSystem :
java.security.AccessControlException: access denied
(java.io.FilePermission
/var/lib/tomcat4/webapps/forumdemo read)

This is just the top of the stack dump. I can provide
the whole thing if needed. BTW, the tomcat example
servlets and JSPs work just fine.I have not changed
the config of Tomcat at all except to make it explode
war files.

Actually, that's not it. On this system tomcat runs as
user tomcat4 who is in the group nogroup. I also added
tomcat4 to the group webapps which is what my dev team
will be in. The dirs were 775 owned by tomcat4 and
webapps. Just to check I changed ownership to
tomcat4.nogroup, restarted tomcat and got the same
exact error. Also the install directory is
/usr/share/tomcat4 but the webapps dir is a link to
/var/lib/tomcat4/webapps , the link was part of the
default debian install of tomcat4.

It seems pretty simple - that you have a permissions problem. LogKit is
trying to make a new 'velocity.log' file in the
/var/lib/tomcat4/webapps/forumdemo directory. Take a look at directory
permissions and see if that's it.
