Portlet Data Security Question

We are using Jetspeed with Tomcat and have implemented a couple of portlets using Velocity. One of our screens will be obtaining confidential data from the user. How can we make sure the data for that portlet is secure when submitted by the user to our server/database? How would we implement SSL capability? Thanks for your comments or direction.
