Yeah no uses that I've known about in the nearly 3 years I've been here. Sounds fine to me.

I'm not aware of any uses since then so we should consider deleting the option and associated code (maybe making it a no-op so that driver scripts continue to work). It's ~20 lines of code in an already-complex function.
