[~ab] - would you have any thoughts on this proposed change? It would be from 7.1 onwards only and would be clearly documented in the CHANGES.txt upgrading section.

In doing so it also tidies up the (private) _SolrMetricManager.preparePlugin_ logic which currently would reject class attribute values other than the base _SolrShardReporter_ and _SolrClusterReporter_ classes.
