Applet & Struts

Hi,

I would like your advices about the following question :

With Struts, controls on the client side are made with javascript.

But if you need a lot of controls, it may be difficult to make them only
with javascript. A java applet enables to make a lot of difficult
controls, but is it judicious to use an applet as a view, with the
Struts framework?

Thank you for your answers!

Please don't be too severe with me, I'm only a newbie...

Hi Nathalie,
There are several products available that want to make it easier for
developers to develop more sophisticated front-end clients to back-end J2EE
type systems that aren't limited to the html controls that you're limited to
with the browser, the ultimate consumer of the struts output. I know of one
in particular that I think is quite good. It is a product though, not an
open source project. If you're interested, email me directly and I'll
provide you with more information. I wouldn't want to waste the list's time
with product details that no one is interested in.

I use applets to deliver Flash to the client. It melts the hard drive and
blows the monitor.

AFAIK the only javascript struts outputs is for the validator - and thats an
optional 'cosmetic' feature that can be switched off without effecting
(affecting/afecting/efecting arrrgh! Ive lost my ability to spell!)
application correctness. Struts 'controls' are pretty much just your basic
html field types!

As for applets: applets are bad. n'kay.
(You have all the issues related to ensuring the user has a jvm installed
with their browser, and that your applet will run in that jvm (for example
the dodgy 1.1 MicroSoft JVM etc...))
And anyhow... applets are soooo yesterday. Way uncool. Maybe you want to
look at webstart?
Using either with struts as a replacement for html forms would be probably
be more effort than its worth.
