Web site link cleanup
Hi,
Since non-https websites are displayed as "not secure" in most browsers
these days, I'm going through all links in the Subversion web site. I then
came across a few links that doesn't work or doesn't support https in a
good way and I'm looking for some feedback.
There are several "natural" changes where the original address redirects (s/
www.elego.de/www.elegosoft.com/, s/www.doxygen.org/www.doxygen.nl/), I have
validated that the links seem correct.
There are also several naive changes just switching to https where the site
supports https (svn.apache.org) or even automatically redirect (
www.red-bean.com).
I will commit these changes to staging shortly.
Mentioning red-bean.com, it seems that svnbook.red-bean.com doesn't support
https. I've reached out to Fitz (since I've been in touch with him
previously) but if someone else read this and pick it up I think it would
be a good thing.
There are a few slightly tricker questions:
* In news.html, under the 2013 hackathon, there is a link to
https://www.elegosoft.com/en_US/page/nachlese-subversion-hackathon-berlin-2013,
however that page is only in german now. I'm considering linking to
archive.org, however there are some recorded talks and interviews that I
can't find anymore. Does anyone have the original and could we add them to
our own site?
* In packages.html, under Mac OS X, there is a link to Fink "maintained by
Christian Schaffner", however on the linked page the maintainer is Daniel
Johnson. I'm leaning towards removing the maintainer's name to so we don't
have to keep track of changes. Opinions?
* There are a lot of links in /docs/ concerning older versions. Should we
keep them frozen as a historic document or try to update them? For future
versions, I will try to fix the obvious in the code (but that's another
project).
* Same thing with older release notes. Should we keep them frozen as a
historic document or try to update them?
* In docs/community-guide/mailing-lists.part.html, there is a link to
https://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html however that redirects
domain landing site. Using archive.org I think I have found the original
page https://unicom.crosenthal.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html, but I would
like someone to verify it for me.
* In faq.html there is a link to www.onlamp.com, I guess it is a book
preview. It redirects to https://www.oreilly.com/radar/, I have linked
through archive.org.

Daniel Sahlberg

Thanks for your feedback. I've not heard from anyone else so for now I've
updated the above links to point to archive.org in r1891737 and rephrased
slightly.

Thanks for your feedback! I've left the e-mail in my inbox and intend to
look at the elego links again later on (hoping for input from others on how
to change them, but otherwise I'll try to make it work).

For anyone following this thread but not reading commits@, I have committed
a series of patches, changing links in the source code: r1891236, r1891253,

Sure. And to be clear, we shouldn't edit old tags for this. If we need
to change a tag, we can create a branch off it, or make the change in
the 1.A.x branch [assuming it has no other relevant changes].

Thanks for the heads-up. These didn't turn up in my grep-ing since I was
only looking for http://.
There are additiona links for the years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and
2016 (in http://subversion.apache.org/docs/community-guide/general.html)
which I cannot find at all in the current elegosoft.com site.
However "... meets in Berlin for a Hackathon once a year: 2016, 2015, ..."
doesn't seem very current. For this reason I'd suggest to remove the
complete paragraph from HACKING. Other option to rephrase "in the past ...
met in Berlin" and link to archive.org.

Oh, sorry. Missed one step: Remove _US from the redirection target, which
in turn redirects to:
https://www.elegosoft.com/en/nachlese-subversion-hackathon-berlin-2013/

I thought about this but I couldn't invent a way to inject the interviews
within archive.org and thus it didn't provide a good user expericen, which
is why I didn't list this as an option.

Alright. And it might be possible to only update this within the website
and not changing the old tags/regenerating the docs from source so no
voting required at all. However since it is quite a bit of work I'll only
do it if someone say "we MUST".
I'll try to find some time to update the docstrings in /trunk within the
next few weeks.

Stefan, any news here? It'd be nice to be able to host these publicly
again, and I'm sure if we'd had the foresight to ask back in 2013 elego
would have said yes at the time.

I believe Stefan Sperling is still with Elego (at least he posted with this
domain in the beginning of June). @Stefan Sperling <st...@apache.org> Can
you verify if Elego would allow us to host these interviews?
If not, maybe someone in PMC can store them in /repos/private. (I'm not in
the PMC).

As an interim step, I've uploaded a copy to
svn-qavm.apache.org:~danielsh/Subversion_Hackathon_2013/ in case my
platters are hit by a bus.
If we may host those files publicly, let's do so. If not, I don't think
there's anything preventing us from keeping a copy privately to the PMC,
so we can do that (under /repos/private).

Fifth option:
- Link to elego's page in archive.org, and mirror the interviews (with
permission, if one is needed)
Also, regardless of what we do, it's probably a good idea that someone
other than me should have a copy of the interviews, if nothing else then
for future archaeologists.

Sure. And FWIW, there's nothing stopping us from updating the links in
the HEAD revision of old minor branches, including unsupported ones.
That doesn't even require STATUS voting [1].

These are the ones, yes. I see four different options with this link:
- Modify the link to point to elego's current site. Pro: Least work, also
linking to a current site. Con: In german, only and doesn't contain the
links to the interviews.
- Modify the link to point to elego's old site via archive.org. Pro: "As it
was supposed to be" Con: That page (
https://web.archive.org/web/20171206002300/https://www.elegosoft.com/en_US/page/nachlese-subversion-hackathon-berlin-2013)
contains links to the interviews, but those links are 404.
- Keep the link, but mark it as obsolete. Pro: No re-writing of history.
Con: We loose some part of history.
- Copy the contents from archive.org and host it including the interviews
on the site or in WIKI. Pro: Preserve history. Con: Copyright issue needs
to be resolved with elego (and whoever took the photos).

I should rephrase: Do we want to? Are there still relevant information in
these interviews?

Links to java.sun.com in the javahl docs. This is probably from docstrings
in the source.
Links to www.doxygen.org in the api docs. These are "generated by".
I'm leaning towards leaving old docs as-is (especially the "generated by"),
but change the docstrings in the source for a future release.

+1. Presumably the up-to-date information is available behind the link.

Not sure what you have in mind here. Example?

Older release notes are part of the current release's documentation, so
I vote to update them.

Thanks, looks good to me. I'll commit an update to the site when I find
some time.

Noted. As far as I could find find, all references are to s.r-b.com except
for the first page. I was already thinking about changing to the canonical
URL to make it easier to grep in case of future changes.

Thanks Mike!
For reference of anyone following the thread but not reading commits@, I
have changed all the links in the website (r1891385 and r1891386).
(Exception: didn't change old CVEs and didn't change old API docs.)
Kind regards,

This should be fixed, unless I messed something up.
TL;DR: Make sure all svnbook URLs use the canonical
https://svnbook.red-bean.com/... form (not svnbook.com, www.svnbook.org,
etc.).
The previous site configuration supported incoming non-SSL requests aimed
at [www.]svnbook.[com|org] and the canonical svnbook.red-bean.com, and
redirected everything to the canonical server name. For now, I've
configured ONLY the canonical svnbook.red-bean.com for SSL support. Old
non-SSL URLs that point at non-canonical server names will still redirect
to the (now-SSL) canonical server name.
