[ANNOUNCE] "Practical mod_perl" book is released under Creative Commons license

Hi,

The complete "Practical mod_perl" book [1] is now available online under
the terms of the CreativeCommons [2] "Attribution Share-Alike License" [3].

Attribution: The licensor permits others to copy, distribute, display, and
perform the work. In return, licensees must give the original author credit.

Share Alike: The licensor permits others to distribute derivative works
only under a license identical to the one that governs the licensor's work.

Thanks to all who have purchased our book so far. You can still get the
printed version from your favorite book store and it will certainly make a
nice "light" XMas present (hint, hint :).

Eric Cholet and Stas Bekman

p.s. I've just put things together quickly, so if you find some problems
please let me know. I know the HTML is a bit broken, but it'll be fixed
soon. We also need to fix the copyright notices in the HTML version of the
book.

Cool!  Stas++ and prodigem++!

Btw, the bittorrent stats/peers for the book can be found at:

Eric thinks that 10MBps or higher is the best (so it doesn't hog your
network).

I've also released a bittorrent, (kindly hosted by prodigem, who hosts
creative commons torrents for free):

http://www.torrentocracy.com/prodigem/download.php/stas/mod_perl.torrent

please consider seeding and upload the link to bittorrent indexes (to the
remaining ones).

The demands for the pdf tarball (12.5MB) of our book is overwhelming and
hogging the 3Mbps pipe, if you can donate some bandwidth to mirror the
tarball please contact Eric (CC'ed) off-list. Thanks a lot!

Thanks Yining, now fixed, with help of #axkit-dahut channel folks. If you
have the MozCC plugin installed it now shows nice creative commons icons
in the status bar.

in the other news, Eric reports that the pdf of the book was downloaded
800 times over the last 3 days. We should probably setup a bittorent to
save the bandwidth, kindly provided by logilune.com.

I think so. You probably want the source pod files (may be we should put
those online too)

right, I'll add those.

Already got a copy when it was fresh out of the press :-) but didn't
have enough time reading the complete book yet - maybe one of new year
resolutions is do that.

I think the important bits missing is the license RDF segments in the
site and html book pages. The RDF helps the creative commons search
engine[1] to index the site, the segment is something like the following:

Thanks Stef.

I still didn't quite recover from the pain of delivering the first book,
which took 3.5 years instead of 9 months. I doubt I'm going to do that
again any time soon.

In any case mp2's release comes with a huge vollume of docs accessible
from http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/index.html, and the missing parts are
available from the mp1 docs. Here is the breakdown of mp2 docs size:

the user guide: 321pp
the API manpages: 487pp
the dev guide: 96pp
the win32 docs: 23pp
-----------------------
Total 927pp

So it's not like you have nothing to read :)

Funny it bypasses the size of our book by 3 pages (924pp) :)

It's a great book. I've bought it about a year ago. And it's really very
nice of Stas and Eric Cholet to make it publicly available. But it's
main focus is still on MP1. Only part V is about MP2.

Stas, no complaints, I know you put tons of effort in modperl ! Only a
hint : the moment you write a book specific on MP2 : I will buy it directly.

You are correct. The mp2 chapters (http://modperlbook.org/html/part5.html)
were written almost 2 years ago, and mp2 has changed significantly since
then, so you'll be probably wasting your time reading them.

The book is written based on mp1, but the majority of the following parts
of the book, still perfectly applies to mp2:

Part I: mod_perl Administration http://modperlbook.org/html/part1.html
Part II: mod_perl Performance http://modperlbook.org/html/part2.html
Part III: Databases and mod_perl http://modperlbook.org/html/part3.html
Part IV: Debugging and Troubleshooting http://modperlbook.org/html/part4.html

For the mp2-specific installation/configuration/etc see:
http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/

is this release all ok with MP2 ?
in the fisrt chapter, you talk about apache 1.3,
so, for MP2, does i read only the online mp manual ?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] "Practical mod_perl" book is released under Creative Commons license

Posted by Alfred Vahau <Al...@upng.ac.pg>.
Hi,
I wish to express my sincere gratitude over the public release of
Practical mod_perl book.
It will definitely provide in-depth insight into this technology whose
development I have been following
over the past four three years and yet cannot seem to tie the pieces
together. I am very much a one man
of open source persuasion operating in an otherwise proprietary
environment. My main challenge is
to bridge the gap between open source and proprietary systems and I find
real allies in Perl and Apache
and their derivatives in doing that.

My institution is in the process of evaluating open source software for
online student administration systems
which will include viewing transcripts online as well as online payment
of fees. To my mind, modperl can be
used to do these as was indicated by some of the replies I received to
my previous posting on this list enquiring on modperl-based student
systems. Other languages were also suggested as potential candidates.

Good books are hard to acquire readily from this part of the world and
so the availability of this
resource online is an asset to me.

Thank you,

Alfred,
