OpenSymbol is an Unicode font, therefore it is the expected behavior, that you
get the character A when you press the key A on your keyboard.
OpenSymbol is a font, that includes those characters, which are needed to write
mathematical formulas with the Math module. Are you sure your are looking for
that?

If you are looking for graphics, look at the subset "Dingbats" in other fonts.
You should avoid fonts, that use glyphs which do not correspond to the meaning
of the code point. All modern operating systems and applications use Unicode.
For details on Unicode see http://www.unicode.org/.

--- Comment #2 from Arny <ar...@gmail.com> ---
Thank You, Regina, for answering; the gol is to put in a text an arrow and a
miu (from the greek alphabet); I considered three possibilities:
1. select the Opensymbols font from the right Text Property pannel or from the
left top row font disply;
2. insert special character;
in the former option I was able to type greek characters, but not the arrow
in the latter, I was able to type both; why?
It is hard to me undestand why in the display of the Opensymbol font arrows and
other nice chgaracters are seen, but when you choose that font nothing happens.
Furthermore I was not abkle to find Dingbats; where it is?
bye

Hi Arny, such questions should be not here in Bugzilla, but you should ask in
the forum or mailing list. https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Communication

Method 1 does not solve the problem, how to enter characters, which are not
contained in the keyboard. BTW. µ is on the keyboard with AltGr-M.
Method 2 works always.

If you use the Insert-Special-Character dialog you will see left-top a
drop-down list for the font and right-top a drop-down list for the supported
subsets. And one of these subsets is "Dingbats" (if the font supports it).

Method 3: Use the replacement table of the AutoCorrect feature, for example -->
results in →

Ask the community, but not here.
