RE: [users@httpd] Apache and Flash

Ok, yes everyone has Flash installed already. They're all also using
IE6.

Server has not been down nor getting heavy traffic.

So what else could be up?

Seems to me that people behind a firewall are having trouble accessing
the Flash content. However they don't have problems with any other Flash
pages. It's not the file either because it works for them if I upload it
to another server.

Anyone know what could possibly be wrong?

Well, for the people that HAVE flashed installed, they will be able to
see it.

For the people that can't see it, they *should* be promted to download
flash and install it. IF not they need to install the flash viewer from
macromedia.com and install it.

Also, what browsers are people using?

IE 6.0 here..

Your page wont even load... Server must be down, or its getting heavy
traffic, or something else is up . . .

Gary,

I agree Flash is OK, but it can be a PITA also. I will usually skip it unless it is one

When I am nice I use somethign like

<Directory ....
or.. VirtualHost .. whatver.. (thouhg see below; directory isbetter)

	# Make rather sure we are using TLS before we start
        # messing with passwords and all that.
        #
        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on	# or use SSLRequireSSL
					# + error routing depending
					# on threath model
        RewriteRule (.*) https://intranet.asemantics.net/ [R]

and then the usual

	AuthType basic
	...
	require valid user

This is the fairly friendly and not that locked down config which is fine
in an environment where you control the resources and trust the users who
have an account on your system.

If I am not so nice; have a paranoid customer; or just as a precaution I
may defined the above but also put a SSLRequireSSL on the more sensitive
resources as well (say with a very narrow directory or file pointer) - to
trap any errors should someone fiddle with the config.

Do not use this with things like Location or other URI rather than
physical file path avoiding techniques.

[users@httpd] Basic Auth and SSL

Posted by Duncan Brannen <db...@st-andrews.ac.uk>.
Just curious,
Is there any way to force apache to use SSL any time it's
asking a browser for authentication? We've a few areas of our web site
where users ask for passwords & it would be nice if I could get apache
to automatically switch to SSL for these areas without the user having to
do it.

Users would often forget the https:// if they had to type it and use http://
anyway.

I don't know whether it's the issue, but take the DEFLATE filter
(mod_deflate) - that works only on HTML "data". Although we sometimes take
our understanding that HTTP payloads can be generic data for granted,
sometimes the data type does make a difference at some small point in the
server - like a HTML-aimed module. Now in this case, it could be that, for
example, mod_deflate is gzipping all content, which while it *should* be OK,
is not supported by most browsers (which mostly accept only gzipped HTML)

Re: [users@httpd] New discovery

Posted by Tim Wort <ti...@pobox.com>.
One way that a router could cause this: first if the server is behind a
firewall that blocks all ICMP messages (a typical mistake by inexperienced
firewall admins) it is possible that a router between the server and the
client requires the the MTU of the packets be reduced. Most modern systems
send packets with the DNF (do not fragment) flag set. When fragmentation
is required on such a packet the router that requires this will return a
ICMP message to the sender requesting a reduced packet size. If the
firewall blocks this your data will appear to be sent but will never
arrive and only the logs (or using a sniffer beyond the router) on the
router will explain why the packets (ICMP messages) are dropped. Because
HTML is typically smaller amounts of data it will make it past the router
that requires fragmentation.

This type of problem is generally inconsistant depending on where the
packets need frgmentation, if its a long way down stream you will only see
it when talking with particualr machines (beyond the offending router) but
not from other parts of the network. If the offending router is close to
you it is possible you will see this problem with all larger files. Does
ftp work from the same client to youe server?

How is an image or any other "data" different from HTML?

How is a person not directly connected to the Internet? Even a pigeon
carrying datagrams is still IP.

I have to admit this problem does have me a little intrigued. I don't
know if the problem does relate specifically to the type of data or the
connection.

Thinking about it. The HTML is more than likely all 7-bit. Images and
Flash will have 8-bit data. Do images show up broken in people's
browsers that don't work? Have you tried wget (or even telnet to see if
the headers look okay) on a machine that can't display the pages, to see
if anything is retrieved, and what state it is in. But why can some
people retrieve it correctly, and others can't? If the problem was on
the server's end, it would effect everyone. If the problem was on the
client's end, they shouldn't be able to view any images. Maybe a
strange interaction between both ends or a router somewhere in the middle?

I like a good mystery I'll keep reading.

I had seen that problem when I had a T-1 with Savvis. It was a router issue.

[users@httpd] New discovery

Posted by Tim McCormick <ti...@timmcc.co.uk>.
Ok, I think I've found what's happening to my server, but I still don't
know why. It has nothing to do with Flash.

Anyone who does not connect to the internet directly cannot access
anything other than plain HTML from the site (not even pictures).
According to the logs the files get sent out, but they never arrive.

Any insights as to what could be the problem?

My bad... The problem is with the his HTML tags or the use of Frames.
I use Flash everyday with frames and I'm on the list thus also use
Apache. Just program one page name in index.html and insert only the
<object> and <embed> tags with no frames and check it out.

It's the other way around, IE uses <object> and NS <embed>, Mozilla also
uses <object> now, and that is what is recommended by the W3C. But the
poster also said all the original visitors that were having trouble,
were using IE6.

I use both Apache and Flash... over 80% of the browsers have flash in
some from, but problem your have is not from Apache or Flash. It's
your HTML and the frame you set-up. Your must use the <OBJECT> tag for
Netscape browsers and the <EMBED> tag for IE users. You have not used
them in your index.html or the html page is not showing up in your
frame page.

Next time ask people who use the program. Check with Flash user sites.

well, I just checked it, it loaded the missing plugin glyph fine.
( no flash capability wanted )
though I did notice one thing about the frameset source:
<html>

   <frameset rows="100%,*" border="0" frameborder="0" framespacing="0"

shouldn't this:
Your browser doesn't appear to support frames - please click
<a href="http://217.42.49.139">here</a> to view the site.
be in these format tags:
  <noframes><strong></strong><div ID="390"><em></em>

the no framesupport comment won't have the bold or italic emphasis if it
isn't, and if you didn't want itemphasised, you don't need the tags.

RE: [users@httpd] Apache and Flash

Posted by Steven Pierce <pa...@speakeasy.net>.

Tim,

I see one issue is that you have two IP addresses pointing to the same place.
The one you did a trace route on is not the same one that I looked at before.
So that could be a big issue.

Are you running this on a box you have, or an ISP???

Ya, I thought about doing a trace route earlyier to see if it was me,

I've looked at the site before, so DNS cache is probably alive. After
clearing the page cache, a get took about 0.6 sec. A subsequent get to
217.42.49.139 takes about 0.38 sec, and the reload about 0.33 sec. So
the site seems OK.

For the most part, I consider frames and flash a PITA. This page isn't
bad, though.

This is weird. All you folks are having such problems while I can view both the HTML and Flash pages
no problem (and the flash loads up perfectly and smoothly).

Tim,

Are you pointing the to a flash file? I have not used flash on a site before. I am
still working with HTML mainly. Yes, it did work OK with the plain HTML file.

I guess we need to start with the basics. You are using Apache X? What O/S are
you using?? How are you point the files (flash) on the site?? I looked at the code you
had from the IP listed site. I did not see anything that pointed to swf for your
site. All I saw was some information for Macromedia's site..

Perhaps it's the domain name provider, try going directly to

The Flash file is only about 3k.

Alex,

It is not you, it is the site. I went to the site also, and it was coming up blank.
I looked at the code on the site, and it is does not have much on it.

<html>
  <head>
    <title>www.timmcc.co.uk</title>
  </head>
  <frameset rows="100%,*" border="0" frameborder="0" framespacing="0" framecolor="#000000">
    <frame src="http://217.42.49.139" name="Easyspace">
  </frameset>
  <noframes><strong></strong><b><i></i></b><b></b>
Your browser doesn't appear to support frames - please click
<a href="http://217.42.49.139">here</a> to view the site.
  <div ID="065"></div><em><div ID="504"></div></em><strong></strong></noframes>

</html>

Is the code from the site. Even the IP address takes you no where.

I have NO idea how much, or how little flash you have on your site:
www.timmcc.co.uk But I have been waiting for it to load for about 20min now
and I'm on cable.

How big is your site? How big are the flash files?

I can ping your site fine (around 80ms average) but something is taking to
long to load. I'm thinking it *might* be the flashes movies, but not sure.
This never has happened to me before with flash sites so I have no idea.

My suggestion is make an index page with plain text, and then have a link
going to the flash pages, and another link going to a different page. I just
want to see if I'm able to even go to your site. It *migh* be my crappy
attbi dns servers tho.

Good Luck!

not everyone has flash,
no everyone has ie of any version.
I don't, and did say so.
I also pointed out that flash is so slow in loading that I don't stay on
flash sites, and I know 75% of people that responed to a survey I
conducted say the same. flash is bad for a business site, it costs them
customers.
