RFC | Easy Configuration of River Services (Hello World)
Hi all,
I've recently finished writing some useful code for easily configuring
and starting River services. I'd really appreciate some feedback on
the code and approach before I push it into the trunk ready for
release.
The code can be found in;
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/river/jtsk/skunk/easystart/
There's also some Scala code in there which you can ignore for now. I
haven't decided what to do with that yet or how/if we can get Jenkins
to build it.
There's also a page which describes how the code can be used and
extended on our site. It's not linked in yet, so the link is below.
http://river.apache.org/helloworld.html
I've taken Sim's Velocity builder approach and written a bunch of
stuff on top of that, so let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Tom

Shall we replace the building of river with downloading the binary jars?
We could provide urls to jenkins build jars for the time beeing, in a
later stage to be replaced with a url to our distribution?.

Thanks for publishing it, it's not the first time I've forgotten to do that.
Replacing the "down load the source" with "download the binaries"
would be better, the whole premise behind the work was to make it less
"scary" for new comers. I'll make the change.

Text has now been changed, the page should be updated shortly.

I'll change the text. The optional JAR is only if you want to use the
src-extras-examples source which demonstrates this new way of
configuration. If you don't care and just want to use it, then you
just need the src-extras code, which is build by "ant dist" anyway.

Shall we remove the optionality then? I wouldn't know what to decide if
i was a newbie.

This particular branch contains two things (three if you count the scala bits).
1) Is how configure and start services without using config files.
2) Is how to write your own service that uses the above.
Because it's a new way of configuring services, it's aimed at both
existing and new users. However, the ease with which you can
configure and start services with it means that it's ideally suited to
helping new users write Hello World services.

Good question, I reckon it probably fits a "newbie wants to contribute to
River" usage case a bit better?

Is it something we need for 'newbie tries out river' usage case?

>From memory...
I've created two new source directories, (or used a new-ish one and
created a new one). One is for the "extras" code, for which I believe
you've already created an Ant target to build. The second,
src-extra-examples, is to build a JAR with the example code that uses
the "extras" code. So, you certainly don't need it for a complete
River distribution.
You're right though, I should make it clear why you might want to
build this extra JAR.
Cheers.

in "Getting the Code and Building River" you mention a optional step:
Optionally, you can also;
$ cd ../src-extra-examples
$ ant # This will build the lib/extra-examples.jar
My question:
- why should i take this optional step?
- if the reason is not all that clear to a newbie, could we include it
as a mandatory step?
- where is this optional step attached to? (by using .. i'm stepping out
of the checked-out material.
