Is it necessary to set HADOOP_HOME?

I am running HDFS on CDH 5.2. Is it required to set HADOOP_HOME? I can see that Drill is able to access HDFS without HADOOP_HOME. But I am unable to run query on HDFS parquet file. I was thinking is this has anything to do with the HADOOP_HOME.
