[Bug 123338] New: When exporting to doc, PNG images with
transparency are not transparent anymore
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123338
Bug ID: 123338
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: When exporting to doc, PNG images with transparency
are not transparent anymore
Product: Writer
Version: 4.0.0
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows, all
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: save-export
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: niels.maschmeyer@gmail.com
CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Created attachment 81612

Writer odt file with inserted transparent PNG file.
When I add an PNG image with transparent information into a writer odt file, it
is done correctly with the transparent information displayed. (see attached
document)
When I save this file in the Word format the png image looses it's default
transparency. To get the png transparent again I have to mark the image in
Word, choose "Colors and Lines", and set in "Fill" the transparency to 100%
again.
The transparency for PNG pictures should be set to 100% as default or at least
a configurable option.

Alan Hancock [November 14, 2013]
AOO401m5(Build:9714) - Rev. 1524958
Windows 7
I was able to reproduce the bug with the following steps:
1. Download the sample document with green background and circle with
transparency.
2. Save document as .doc.
3. Open .doc file to notice transparent background is full white.
I can confirm that within MS Word, you can recreate the transparency by setting
the transparency option to 100%. (see Description for instructions)
I checked this with moving the image around in multiple locations and found no
location altered the ultimate effect on the converted file.
This bug should be resolved because individuals that encounter it are likely
not to realize there is a fix. If that individual then resolves to use only MS
Word, the integrity of OpenOffice falls slightly. That said, it should not be
considered priority 5 as it is not critical.
A work-around for this problem is either to alter the transparency once
converted to MS Word or to insert the image after converting to MS Word.

>From my developer view it would be very important to be fixed.
I am working mainly with the ODT format to generate documentation on the fly.
In our online financial tool the customer has the option to generate different
report formats. Those formats are ODT, PDF and Word.
Our process works that way that our Web service application creates an odt file
on the server which will get picked up by an other stand alone application
running on the server. This stand alone application uses the com interface to
OpenOffice to start it, open the odt document from the temp folder,
automatically updates the table of content of the document and saves it in the
pdf and word format.
We are using many different logos/images from the customer on different
colorful backgrounds (Customer logo with transparent background in all
diagrams).
They are used from different accountants for their customer so they expect the
customer graphs to be incorporated into the design with transparent background.
So with this background, the work around can not be an option for me and other
developer, using the odt format combined with open office.
I wrote this just to give you an insight on why this defect is important for me
and some other users too.
So we offer for the user primary an odt document and as second option a word or
pdf document. So we are kind of advertising OpenOffice to our customer so you
will directly benefit too ;-)
I can imagine that more and more developer will choose this way to use
odt/openoffice to generate high quality reports instead of word in their
application. (I guess we are all not big fans of the Microsoft monopol...).
Therefore from our point of view this would be important.
Just one thought. Cheers ;-)

ALG: @niels.maschmeyer:
Trying to sort this out (three kinds of transparency are used here)
- (a) the PNG has alpha channel, thus transparent part
- (b) the GraphicObject has an own, 0-100% transparency for it's content
- (c) the GraphicObject may have a FillStyle with transparence added
All three work in parallel
Loaded your example, save as Word, reload -> all still the same (Page gets
white), (a) is kept, (b) unchanged, (c) not set.
Loaded with Word, (a) is kept, not sure if Word knows (b), but indeed the
GraphicObject gets a (c) background fill of white with no transparence.
Adding ORW to cc..
