help: svn: Retrieval of mergeinfo unsupported by

I'm getting the above error message on my client.

The client is Ubuntu with > svn, version 1.5.4 (r33841)

The repository is Debian with
svn, version 1.5.1 (r32289)

Since these are both 1.5, I expected that the merge would go as documented.

What am I doing wrong?

Or more importantly, how do I do the merge I need.

I've got new, committed code in
sandbox/project/branches/pat/*
that I want to merge into
sandbox/project/trunk/*

I'm pulling my hair out.

I even tried to upgrade the SVN on the server, using backports, but that
failed because the repository doesn't have proper GPG keys.

Did that, and it seems to be "better" but I am still getting a weird
message:

svn: 'https://www.pfarrell.com/repos/bbook/branches/pat@4243' must be
ancestrally related to 'https://www.pfarrell.com/repos/bbook@4243'


both directores have nothing outstanding in SVN
they are both at the same revision level
