(De-)Serializers for arbitrary objects

Hi

I've been playing around with SOAP for a couple of weeks now, and I'm
now looking at using SOAP as a "proper" RPC Mechanism. I am having
trouble getting to grips with the (de-)serialisation issue;

If I want to transfer arbitrary objects, or even graphs of objects,
what exactly do I need to provide? Serializers and Deserializers for
every class used?

Is there a generic (De-) Serializer, maybe on the basis of (java)
Object Serialisation ? (I realise that this is A Bad Thing WRT
interoperability, but it should be viable for a "closed" system that
uses SOAP as an RPC mechanism.

What about the different encodings - I'm guessing that literalxml
means I serialize my objects "outside" SOAP and then just send the XML
document / string generated; how much of the serialisation issue is
automated in Apache SOAP when using soapenc, and what about XMI?

Any hints, pointers and instructions greatly appreciated!
TIA
