Google Summer of Code – NuttX with pysimCoder

Hello,

I am writing this email to let NuttX community and other people
interested in pysimCoder integration with NuttX know about updates
regarding this Google Summer of Code project. The student applications
period for GSoC is starting tonight at 8.00 pm CEST. I have done some
final typographic changes to my NuttX Support for Rapid Control
Applications Development with pysimCoder proposal and will upload it
as soon as system allows it. Google Document of the proposal can be
seen below:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/13jipDxufiD3QGfJ0Udnp_B_3JxieoPO3lvrCUvLVNhQ/edit?usp=sharing

Regarding mentors, Professor Roberto Bucher and Dr. Pavel Píša have
already expressed the interest to participate as my mentors during the
project. The mentor´s assigning to the project should be probably done
in early stages of the applications period as Apache gives better
early evaluation to project with assigned mentors than to those
without them. Also if anyone from the community has some ideas about
the project or its goals, I would definitely like to talk about them.

I would also like to use this thread to keep you all updated about the
project progress and its outcomes.

Best regards,
Michal Lenc

Hello Maxim,

thanks much for response.

I and my studnet read this, but may it be that I have overlooked
something or do not understand to it.

We have done that, created issue, possible mentors have
responded to issue and idea has propagated up to the central
list.

There is place where I am in doubts. It is not clean how to register
as mentor. The requirement seems to be on the the mentors list.

  mentors@community.apache.org

I have looked how to register two weeks ago. When no response according
to issue has came and no invitation from admins, I have tried to send

  mentors-subscribe@community.apache.org

same as for dev on Apache, but it did not work.

> 3) got student proposals

Link to the proposal document has been sent by studnet to
dev@nuttx.apache.org for discussion, I have suggested
some cleanups during previous preview of the document.

Great, but you want to see mentors. But what is right way
to attach. As I understand, I cannot register to official
site as mentor without invitation (or it was my previous experience
form past years). I have even tried to login with my old credentials
to the Google site, it recognized me somehow but I have not
got to dashboard... So may be bug on Goggle side.
More likely I do not understand something and do it incorrectly.

Yes, I have read Apache scoring system rules. Not sure
the I remember it but when I have document before me,
than it seems clean.

OK

Great

> Have I answered the question?

Yes except the detail how to register as a Apache mentor.
I am really sorry if I have overlooked it in the documents.

Thanks to rail me back on the right track in advance,

Pavel

Hello NuttX devs :)

It seems no one had time to read https://community.apache.org/gsoc.html
(I do remember I sent the link several times)

so I'll write the process here:

Once ALL Apache projects will
1) collect their ideas
2) register mentors (2 mentors are required per project)
3) got student proposals

we, org admins, will see the numbers and will request slot range from
Google [min, max]

Google will give as N slots (might be less than requested)

then we will score all proposals and find the best N proposals and
will mark them accepted in Google system
(this should be done fast since student can apply to multiple
organisations, by finally accepted only once)

Then Google will check everything and will announce student acceptance

This is the time to congratulate students and start to work :))

Have I answered the question?

Hi Pavel,

I also don't know how the process will work. I'm adding CC Maxim
Solodovnik to help us.

We got a student interested on integrating Rust to NuttX, his
description is here:

Re: Google Summer of Code – NuttX with pysimCoder

Posted by Pavel Pisa <pp...@pikron.com>.
Hello to everybody,

the time advances too fast and I expect that it is time
to negotiate mentor roles. If I have not missed something,
there has been no response to Michal Lenc proposal yet.

Is there somebody coordinating Apache GSoC for NuttX or should we
negotiate next steps with central Apache GSoC coordinators directly.

My interrest is in the Michal Lenc project which can lead
to significant progress in affordable open-source Rapid Control
Application Platform availability to community.

There has been registered issue for the project as stated
in Apache GSoC instructions

  https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NUTTX-3

The task has been proposed and accepted into Apache GSoC 2021
projects ideas.

Michal Lenc has prepared proposal (high quality according to me)
which is based on his knowledge from previous contributions
to NuttX and discussion in group of more people addressed
by this e-mail

  https://docs.google.com/document/d/13jipDxufiD3QGfJ0Udnp_B_3JxieoPO3lvrCUvLVNhQ/edit

Roberto Bucher offers to take role of mentor and reviver (he is primary
author of pysimCoder and has invested lot to make it already practically
usable with some NuttX targets) and I as mentor consultant (I have
longer experience with NuttX and its dissemination into company
projects, worked on integration prototype with pysimCoder, but
I am from the same university as Micah Lenc which makes me
not optimal for independent review).

I am not sure if we can apply directly for GSoC mentor roles
or have to wait for invitation. In my multiple RTEMS GSoC
participations as a mentor, I have registered in the respose
to invitation from organization GSoC coordinator.

Can you guide us, please, what should we do next.

Thanks much for response and guiding us to the right direction.

Best wishes and health to you and your relatives,

                Pavel
