setParameter Xalan bug in JDK 1.4?

I took the Xalan support in JDK 1.4 out for a drive today, and ran
into what looks like a bug. Wondered if anyone could shed any light
on this. Not sure what version of Xalan this is. Basically, any
parameter that I try to pass to my stylesheet by calling setParameter
on the Transformer doesn't work. I get the error:
"VariableReference given for variable out of context or without
definition!"
This happens even if I declare the variable in the stylesheet.
Passing it in with setParameter is what seems to break it.
