ActionServlet
I am thinking using struts for my web application. From apache's
struts-example, I found you dont write ActionServlet for controller. My
question is, do you need to write you own ActionServlet.java for controller?
thanks

No. You can use the one that is provided. The struts-config.xml identifies
the "actions", targets of your GETs and POSTs, and maps them to Java
classes. These small Java classes drive the workflow/navigation of the
application. Think of they as little controller components. The
ActionServlet calls these as needed and they determine what is next shown to
a user.
I hope that answers your question. If not send me an email and we'll discuss
it further.

NO,
unless you want extra functionality ( like accessing database etc ).
This you can achieve by writing your "ApplicationActionServlet" which must
extend ActionServlet, and keeping "ApplicationActionServlet" as your
controller servlet. You will have to make the changes reflect this in
web.xml.
Hope it helped
