tarball compile on HP-UX 11 can't find db4 but is installed

Hi Subversion People

In an attempt to use subversion properly ;-) I'm trying to
compile it at work on HP-UX 11.00, so I can access my repository
at home.

I've built and installed autoconf (and automake and m4 prerequisites)
and db4 and libtool. I've not got as far as it complaining that
zlib is missing so I've not compiled that yet.

To help the SVN configure find the stuff it needed I've added
everything relevent to PATH, LPATH, SHLIB_PATH, and then run:

	./configure --enable-maintainer-mode --disable-shared --with-dbm=db4 --with-berkeley-db=/home/ahuxley/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/db4

I see this in the output:

checking for Berkeley DB... found db4
  	setting APRUTIL_INCLUDES to "-I/home/ahuxley/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/db4/include"
  	setting APRUTIL_LDFLAGS to "-L/home/ahuxley/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/db4/lib"

But then at the of the output I get this:

	Configuration for building neon 0.21.2:

	  Install prefix: /usr/local
	  Compiler: gcc
	  XML Parser: expat in
	/var/tmp/20020626/unpacked/subversion-r2291/apr-util/xml/expat/lib
	  SSL library: No SSL support
	  zlib support: zlib not found
	  Build libraries: Shared=no, Static=yes

Now run 'make' to compile the neon library.

	neon configured properly
checking for any extra libraries neon needs... -L/usr/local/lib
checking for static Apache module support... no
checking for Apache module support via DSO through APXS... no
	==================================================================
WARNING: skipping the build of mod_dav_svn
--with-apxs or --with-apache must be used
	==================================================================
checking for Berkeley DB in /home/ahuxley/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/db4... no
configure: error: Could not find Berkeley DB 4.0.14.

I thought maybe it was the same "db-4" v. "db4" problem I'd seen earlier
so created some extra symlinks in db4/lib, but no difference.

I poked around in 'configure', but that's goobledigook :-)

Anybody got any suggestions? Thanks!

Alexis

Actually, it _will_ work somewhat. Look at the HP-UX test results on
svn-breakage. A subset works, but anything involving a second call to
svn_ra_local__split_url won't work. There's an issue about that, and
Greg moved it to post-1.0 yesterday.

The DAV client should work just fine, though.

Yes, you can't access repositories via ra_local (file:///) on HPUX,
because the operating system won't allow you to open the same DB
environment more than once in a process, i.e. you can't open more than
one RA 'session' object to the same repository. It's because mmap()
is anemic on HPUX, and that's what BDB uses to open an environment.

Thanks Philip, that worked!

I checked the last message for HP-UX 11 in svn-breakage, and it
seems you got a lot further than I did. I suspect I have some old
automake/autoconf. But the hierarchy or prerequisites is such that
determining the thing that is out of date is not so simple :-) - autogen.sh
is complaining about autom4te missing, and when I try to make the
latest automake I get:

	te35$ pwd
	/home/ahuxley/automake-1.6.2
	te35$ ./configure --prefix=$HOME/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/automake
	checking for a BSD-compatible install... lib/install-sh -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
	checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
	checking for perl... /home/ahuxley/bin/te35/perl
configure: error: Autoconf 2.52 or better is required

... but ...

	te35$ autoconf --version
	autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.53
Written by David J. MacKenzie and Akim Demaille.

:-))))

I'll wipe out all my old perl, automake, sed, autoconf, m4, python,
make, gawk, .... and build an uptodate OS in my ~/opt ;-)

Thanks for the help!

Not having every used HPUX, I don't know for sure, but Brane said something
about HPUX not working with svn because of something to do with BerkeleyDB
being opened more than once. If you check the list arechive for the
svn-breakage mailing list, you should see a bunch of failed tests for both
hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.11 and hppa1.1-hp-hpux10.20.

Nope ... but it will do in five minutes! Assume it works if you

A quick google search...

Does /home/ahuxley/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/db4/lib/libdb-4.0.sl have execute
permission?

it a go.

Yup, that I did; HP-UX uses SHLIB_PATH and LPATH in place of
LD_LIBRARY_PATH; one is for compile-time and one for run-time, but
I set both 'cos I couldn't remember which way round it was :-)

There should be a file called config.log in the directory where you
ran configure. That should contain details of the test that failed.
At a guess I would assume that the db4 library was not found at
runtime, in which case you need to do whatever is necessary for HPUX
to find runtime libraries -- perhaps add the directory
/home/ahuxley/opt/HP-UX_B.11.00/db4/lib to the environment variable
LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
