Carriage Return/Line feed problem??

I have the following problem...

Create a java class that returns a string with a newline character...
Create a method on the same class that accepts a string

Call the class method through SOAP with the Microsoft Client (Gold version)
retreiving the string.

Send the string straight back without changing it through the other
method...

The string will now be different back on the java class...MS Client/VB has
changed the new line character to carriage return/new line???

This is causing me major headaches....has anyone had a similiar problem and
more importantly fixed it??
