and now regression test invocations of apxs fail on AIX :) 

the problem just seems to be that a few weeks ago when I started using
SH_LDFLAGS in apxs I neglected to call the subroutine that resolves
references to other config_vars.mk variables...  it worked at the time
because there were no such variable references...
