Patch Manager: Enthusiastic Volunteer Wanted

          *** THIS IS NOT A SUMMER OF CODE PROJECT ***
        Any interested person is encouraged to respond to
         this mail, but as this is not a coding task, it
     will not be considered for Summer of Code applications.

Hi all.

For the past couple of years, I've been keeping an eye on any mail with
[PATCH] in the subject, prodding the conversation when needed, and
adding issues to the tracker so they don't get lost. I've been rather
remiss in my duties as of late, and I feel that the time has come for me
to pass the touch to another willing volunteer.

 From HACKING: "The Patch Manager needs a basic technical understanding
of Subversion, and the ability to skim a thread and get a rough
understanding of whether consensus has been reached, and if so, of what
kind. It does not require actual Subversion development experience or
commit access. Expertise in using one's mail reading software is
optional, but recommended :-)."

The complete job description is here:
http://subversion.tigris.org/hacking.html#patch-manager

Personally, I think it's a great way to get more involved with the
project, to learn more about the internals of Subversion and just get to
know some of the other developers better. If you are interested, just
respond to this mail (on list, of course).

You might want to post this on users@ too.

And thanks for having been such a great Patch Manager all this time!
Yours will be tough shoes to fill...

If Karl's coin can be turned into a 4-sided coin, I'm willing to
volunteer to have a try with the patch manager role.

Agreed, and thanks for letting me start without backlogs. Nonetheless, if
you don't find the time to handle the old ones, feel free to pass them
to me.

I'm sure I'll have some questions for you when I start fielding patches,
so please don't throw away the rope-climbing manual just yet. :)

Daniel,
I have a large queue of patch mails that I plan on sorting through in
the next couple of days. If you want to start tracking new patches
which get sent to the list from here on out, I'll make sure that any
currently outstanding ones are taken care of.

I don't know how many ropes there are to show, but I'm happy to answer
any questions you may have. :)

Oops, email problems...

There were three more names (Karl Heinz Marbaise, Daniel Shahaf, and
Charles Acknin) that I didn't see because of some email difficulties.
It's not my spam filters, still haven't figured out what the problem is.
Anyway, Daniel and I talked about it in IRC, and he pointed me to this
Gmane thread showing everyone who replied:

   http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.devel/97474/focus=97523

So the true list of volunteers is:

   Rakotomandimby Mihamina
   Bhuvaneswaran Arumugam
   Augie Fackler
   Karl Heinz Marbaise
   Daniel Shahaf
   Charles Acknin

And the winner (a.k.a., "victim") is:

   $ python
   Python 2.4.4 (#2, Jan  3 2008, 13:36:28)
   [GCC 4.2.3 20071123 (prerelease) (Debian 4.2.2-4)] on linux2
   >>> import random
   >>> random.seed()
   >>> volunteers = ["Rakotomandimby Mihamina", "Bhuvaneswaran Arumugam",
                     "Augie Fackler", "Karl Heinz Marbaise",
                     "Daniel Shahaf", "Charles Acknin"]
   >>> random.choice(volunteers)
   'Daniel Shahaf'
   >>>
   $

So, Daniel, you're the new Patch Manager -- I'm sure Hyrum will be able
to help ease the transition, show you the ropes, etc. If you ever
discover you don't have time to do it, please just say so here. It
looks like we've got at least five people ready to step in if needed.

Thanks to everyone for volunteering so quickly!

Re: Patch Manager: Enthusiastic Volunteer Wanted

Looks like we've got 3 people volunteering to be patch manager to
replace Hyrum K. Wright:

   Rakotomandimby Mihamina <mi...@etu.univ-orleans.fr>
   Bhuvaneswaran Arumugam <bh...@collab.net>
   Augie Fackler <du...@gmail.com>

I think our experience has been that it's best for one person to do this
role, rather than to divide it up, because it requires centralized
bookkeeeping. (Hyrum, tell me if I'm mistaken on this.)

If so, then I suggest we just pick one person at random and let them
have a go at it. If for some reason it doesn't work out (person doesn't
have time, whatever), then one of the other volunteers can try it.

Hyrum, if this sounds good to you, then I'll just post with a 3-sided
coin flip. But I'll wait a day to hear any thoughts you might have,
since you're the current reigning expert on this job :-).

Hyrum, I wish to take on this role. Let me know your comment. I'm sure
you'll hang around to help, in case I need you during initial few weeks.
