HDFSEventSink omnibus patch

Hi Brock, here's the omnibus patch I talked about on FLUME-998, and that you asked to see.

I apologize I haven't had a chance to break these out and contribute them earlier.  I'll do my best to answer questions promptly, though, and will work to get the rest of the additions, etc., I've built for my project posted over the next few weeks, many of which are based on the work I've already contributed in FLUME-935, and most of which are described in comments I made on FLUME-896.
