I am seeing this issue now with a fair amount of regularity with 1.4.
I am attempting to use the same FTP client to download 50K files, one after another, using retrieveFile(string, outputstream). After about 860 or so files, the client often hangs reading from the socket. I will experiment with re-creating every 100 files or so, but that adds extra login time as well.
Removing all the details, the code is simply:
