Fw: Call for Participation for OpenExpo 2008 inZürich, Switzerland (24./25. September 2008)

I'm forwarding this CfP here as I've participated in the last OpenExpo
in Berne, Switzerland. It was a huge success [1][2]. I hope you'll
excuse that most of the information below is in German. There's some
information in English on the OpenExpo website at: http://openexpo.ch/en

[1] http://www.openexpo.ch/en/openexpo-2008-bern/press-release/
[2] http://www.jeremias-maerki.ch/blog/2008/03/14/openexpo-in-berne-was-great/

Matthias Stürmer, one of the organizers, has mentioned to me that they
would be interested in having an Apache Track. In the last issue we were
three people from three different Apache projects. Mine was the only
presentation on an Apache project. I'm not sure we can come up with
enough proposals for a full Apache track but we can certainly try. So I
decided to forward the CfP here to reach a larger audience inside the
ASF. It would be great to see more Apache projects represented there,
either with a small booth or with a presentation. I'm sure it's also a
good opportunity for potential sponsors operating in the D/A/CH area.

Please spread the word! Thanks!

                            - o -

The CfP in English:

OpenExpo, the Swiss conference and trade show for Free and Open Source
Software, takes place for the 5th time Wednesday and Thursday September
24 and 25, 2008 at the Eulachhallen in Winterthur/Zürich.

As a community meeting point and industrial exhibition OpenExpo has
become THE date in Switzerland's Open Source agenda. /ch/open and the
business IT trade show topsoft are inviting to submit speeches, project
presentations and company stands, all to be proposed until Tuesday May
20, 2008. The final schedule will be published in June 2008. After the
fourth OpenExpo was a great success in terms of visitor numbers and
focus on government issues, the fall edition 2008 will concentrate on
innovation and production processes in leading Open Source projects -
for example with Hackontest, the new 24 hour programming competition to
be introduced at OpenExpo as a premiere.

zuvor in Zürich.
http://www.openexpo.ch/openexpo-2008-bern

2. Lancierung Call for Participation für OpenExpo 2008 Zürich
**************************************************************
Bereits konnten erneut namhafte Redner fürs Konferenzprogramm gewonnen

Open Source Software einreichen.
Initiative OSI), Alexander Limi (Initiator Content Management System
Plone), Harald Welte (OpenMoko-Entwickler und Initiator
gpl-violations.org) und Jono Bacon (Koordinator Ubuntu Community).

4. CH Open Source Award 2008
*****************************

Kosten: CHF 120.-
Anmeldeschluss: 28. April 2008

I missed the deadline but I should be able to take care of the booth
on Sept. 25th morning - added my name to the wiki.

I'd also suggest setting up the booth so that it doesn't have to be
manned at all times - we can for example display at the booth the
pictures of Apache people that are around, so that people can grab us.
And add email/IM contact info as well.

yourself on the Wiki:

Great! I've compiled what I know of on a Wiki page [1]. Please update it
if anything is missing. It's probably still not enough for a full Apache
track. The CfP is still running for a few days!!! So please submit your
proposals if you have a good idea.

FYI I have submitted two talks for openexpo.ch, one along the lines of
my ApacheCon EU talk [1], and another one on Sling basics. I also told
Matthias that this might be material for an Apache track (I know him
back from the http://lots.openexpo.ch days).

Fair enough.

I might have access to a color laser printer on Tuesday, if that
happens I'll let you know by Tuesday noon. If that doesn't work out,
there should be a way to reimburse you for printing costs if you keep
the receipts.

See you next week!

Hehe. Added now.

Good idea. There was still some space available at the bottom.

Actually, I prefer the picture I chose because IMO it better reflects
what happens at ApacheCon (Discussions, Notebooks, Hacking...). The
people picture doesn't have so much to do with ApacheCon. Plus to most
people reading this brochure, the people on the picture will be
strangers.

You're right. Let's try it this way. I've trimmed the German version a
bit, too.

Already done earlier today.

Thanks, Bertrand. See you next week.

BTW, I've uploaded new versions.

Hmm, this is from our website. I'm not sure how best to rephrase this. I

Good idea. I've set it to 4 characters. Looks better now without
introducing too many bigger spaces.

Thanks, Bernd. Also many thanks for the German translation. I've had to
trim it a bit since German generally takes a few more characters. The
new PDFs are uploaded at: http://people.apache.org/~jeremias/asf/

Yeah, right. "run" is probably the wrong word. I've changed it to "has"
for the moment for the lack of a better phrasing. I don't think we need
to explain in such a brochure what the arrangements between the ASF and
the producer are. It's "our conference" at any rate. That's what I like
to express there. I'll gladly improve further if anyone has a proposal.
Thanks, Filip!

Bernd, would you still be available to create a German translation of
the brochure? I know it's on short notice by now. You could simply make
a copy of http://people.apache.org/~jeremias/asf/asf-brochure-en.xml and
I can publish the stylesheets and resources to produce the PDF.
Otherwise, I'll give it a try tomorrow or during the weekend.

Looks generally very good. Lots of useful information in a concise form.

A minor nit:

"There are four sponsorship levels, defined
by donation and in-return benefits of sponsorship."

doesn't read well IMO - it's not immediately obvious what "in-return" means.

===

I found the hyphenation some-
what dis-
tracting.

Would it be possible to see if the layout will still work if
hyphenation is disabled?

Or at least restricted to instances where at least 4 or so characters
remain in each part of the word?

great looking brochure. the one thing I would change, is the ApacheCon
piece, the ASF doesn't run the ApacheCon.
hopefully someone from the ApacheCon committee can fill in how we select

If these brochures are based on A4/A5 and if we run out of copies we
could still print more during the show, I presume.

Hi Jeremias,

> ...PDF: http://people.apache.org/~jeremias/asf/asf-brochure-en-up.pdf...

Great stuff! Sorry to answer late, I finally found some time to have a
closer look, here are some suggestions.

It says nothing about the board, maybe just "9 volunteer directors" in
"numbers" would do.

In "projects", it might be good to mention incubating ones, suggest
"plus a number of incubating projects (incubator.apache.org)".

AFAIK ApacheCon Amsterdam 2009 is planned for March 23-27.

Maybe the picture at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/twleung/2011802787/in/set-72157603145226237/
would look better? IIUC it's "all rights reserved" so I guess Ted
Leung would have to authorize its use.

I find the sponsorship part a bit too detailed compared to the rest,
here's an alternate suggestion:

**
The ASF Sponsorship Program is the official avenue for substantial,
non-directed monetary contributions to the ASF. It is the closest and
most direct method for a corporation or individual to support the ASF.
In return, ASF will make official acknowledgement and thanks for the
donation via public relations involvement (as appropriate according to
one of four sponsorship levels), sponsor logos, etc.

More details can be found at www.apache.org/foundation, or by
contacting fundraising@apache.org.
**

Thanks for your work!

Once you're done, I'd suggest informing prc@apache.org of this flyer,
so that others can reuse it as needed.

-Bertrand

I had the flu and was quite busy otherwise lately, but finally I have a
first version of the ASF brochure which I'd like some feedback on (and
pointers to any typos I may have made). I've had to come up with some
text on my own to fit everything in the cramped space. Since I'm not
natively English speaking, there's a good chance that there's some
suboptimal text in places. Other text I have copied from our website.
I'm open for any comments. The goal is to have it ready by the end of
the week so there's still a chance to print a few sheets for OpenExpo
next week.

I ended up doing this in XSL with FOP. Sadly, Scribus only got in my way
but FOP was very cooperative. ;-)

PDF: http://people.apache.org/~jeremias/asf/asf-brochure-en-up.pdf
XML Source: http://people.apache.org/~jeremias/asf/asf-brochure-en.xml

BTW, does anybody who is planning to come to OpenExpo on Wednesday have
access to a decent color laser that he/she could print the brochures on
once the thing is ready? I assume we probably don't need more than 30-40
pieces (although I can always be wrong about that).

Looks nice. My only little complaint would be that it should be
"HTTP Server" instead of "HTTPD" for the Apache HTTP Server project. :)

I've prepared it.

I've designed a proposal for the main booth poster (size A2, done in
Inkscape). I'd appreciate some feedback:
http://people.apache.org/~jeremias/asf/

I'm open for additional ideas on the design. Another thing I'm thinking
about doing is a A4-sized brochure (3-fold) with some basic information
about the ASF: basic values, conferences, sponsoring information, maybe
a project list... I want to do it at least in English but a German
version would also be a good idea since the majority of visitor will be
german-speaking. Bernd, if you want to take a stab at this, you're
welcome. I thought about doing this in Scribus.

As part of the booth arrangement, we get one poster (A2 sized) printed
that we can put up on the small wall at the booth (not great quality but
my FOP poster [1] isn't, either). See [2] for what it looked like last
time in Berne. I'm planning to get creative next week (provided we don't
already have something around which I don't assume).

If there are Apache related talks at the conference, make sure to
include these on whatever material is created at a booth. I think
that's a highly valuable thing to be doing.

Even if it's just a case of printing up some items on b+w paper. Which
talks/bofs to goto is a good call-to-action for a booth.

I'd also be tempted to have a sign-in sheet/poster/something for
Apache people who show up. If you're an Apache committer, put your
name here.

I am able to help out at booth on the 25th.

Would be cool to have a large poster with a big ASF logo and maybe all
projects listed. I am not experienced with posters. What does it take to
make one (sizes etc.) if we don't already have one?

Thanks for the pointer.

I just posted this proposal to both openexpo.ch and openexpo.de.

For those w/o German, it is a talk about a proof of concept project
called OneSourceDocs that is
based on Forrest and generation of user manuals and training slides
from the same document.

However I will only be able to go to Zürich if they
find at least funding for travel expenses.

More info, currently only in German at http://soethe.net/doku.php?id=vortraege:onesourcedocs
.
Will add an english info as soon as I find some time.

I think it's a good idea to just place the proposals. We can
additionally coordinate in some form.

I've asked Mattias Stürmer how openexpo.de and openexpo.ch relate to
each other. I'll let you know.

Good idea! I did that last time, too. Only got the FOP talk accepted,
though. But if we can create enough weight (maybe to the point to have
an Apache track), that should become easier. I think it's extremely
important to tell the people there how the ASF works.

> > BTW, what about an ASF booth at both events? The ASF should be more

The ASF booth is no problem. We simply have to request it. More of a
problem is some PR-materiel. I've got a big poster on FOP [1]. Some
eye-catcher materiel for the ASF as such would be good to have, too.

Agreed. I'm sure the PRC can help us in some way.

Good idea. FOAF extension? A Wiki page or a file in the committers SVN
is probably more light-weight.

If nobody thinks it's a bad idea I'll add a Wiki page on the ApacheCon
wiki as a starting point for non-ApacheCon events where the ASF is
represented.

yes it's good to keep them informed but PRC is a closed list with
limited subscription. IMHO subjects like this are best discussed in
public.

IMHO apache is now big enough to start creating a voluntary list of
committers who are willing to represent apache on a per country basis.
maybe people.apache.org could help...

I'd be interested in participating. Should we just throw CfPs at them or
should we coordinate Apache CfPs beforehand? :-)

Coincidently, I ran into the CfP of German openexpo.de (ends April 30th)
some days ago. This event seems to be related to the swiss one. I think
the ASF should represent there, too! (And if the organizers are
hard/sym-linked with each other, we can test run for Winterthur (very
nice city!). My intention was to submit a talk about the ASF in general
there.

BTW, what about an ASF booth at both events? The ASF should be more
visible at events like these! This is a PRC@a.o thing, right?
