Using tomcat 8.5.27, this problem is still not fixed.
Removed <UpgradeProtocol className="org.apache.coyote.http2.Http2Protocol"/>
and gzip works again.

Again, the users list is the place to seek help with the correct configuration
to enable HTTP/2 compression.
