[net]Which version of ant to build commons-net
Is there any reason not to update the build.xml so that it pulls down and uses
ant-1.6 for building commons-net?

The build.xml file for Commons Net is generated by Maven, so it should not
be edited manually. Otherwise, those changes will be lost as soon as the
generation is run again.
