[users@httpd] How to know that a certficate has expired in Apache-ssl?

I want to give a special message to a user which certificate has expired.
When a user connects witouht certifcate, he gets a 401 redirection page 
error. May I send him a specific error for the case the certificate has 
been correct but hav expired?
