Randall Leeds commented on COUCHDB-1586:
----------------------------------------
+1 Want to avoid the worst case, IMO, which is when there is no message at all but CouchDB still doesn't start!
> couchdb should do sanity checks early on for permissions issues

> Key: COUCHDB-1586
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COUCHDB-1586
> Project: CouchDB
> Issue Type: Bug
> Components: Database Core
> Affects Versions: 1.3
> Reporter: Dave Cottlehuber
> Assignee: Dave Cottlehuber
> Priority: Minor
> Fix For: 1.3
>
>
> many early installation failures are due to missing permissions / access to key directories.
> - couchdb shell script can check for these before the cryptic erlang VM barfs vomitus
> - couch.erl and couch_app.erl could provide more details on missing erlang applications etc.
> These are all quick fixes unless somebody has a better idea!
> Any other suggestions?
