Oh, interesting, never noticed those. That's a lot easier than what we
do in AsterixDB, where the linter actually updates the file, so you
get a bunch of conflicts after folks come back and submit changes in
the new year. Indeed, in that case let the precedent stand.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the additional context and for clarifying how the ASF policy
applies here. That makes sense.

We will update the NOTICE file to use the appropriate year range and
include this change in the next release candidate.
Best,
Xuan

Hi Xuan,

Thanks for looking into this, but the reasoning doesn't hold, and I'd ask you to fix the NOTICE file rather than keep the current wording.

What other projects have in their NOTICE files is not precedent. ASF policy is documented in the ASF Source Header and Copyright Notice Policy [1], not in the wording of other projects' repositories. If other projects use "and onwards", that means those projects have also deviated from the documented format, and nobody has corrected it yet. An uncorrected mistake elsewhere doesn't make the same mistake acceptable here; it's a reason to raise the issue with those projects, not to copy it.

The documented format is a plain year range: "Copyright [yyyy]-[yyyy] The Apache Software Foundation", covering the actual years of the ASF's contributions. "And onwards" also has no legal meaning, as a copyright notice records years of publication and can't claim years that haven't happened or works that don't yet exist.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi Ian,

Regarding the NOTICE file, I checked several existing ASF projects and
found that Apache Spark and Apache Hadoop use similar "and onwards" wording
in their NOTICE files. Given this existing ASF precedent, we believe the
current wording is acceptable, so we plan to keep it unchanged for this
release.

Thanks for raising this point.

Best,
Xuan

Re: [VOTE] Release 1.2.0-incubating RC3 of Apache Texera (Incubating)

Posted by Xuan Gu <xu...@uci.edu>.
Hi Ian,

Thank you for the thorough review and for catching this issue.

We reviewed the files under docs/ and agree that the documentation files
should include the ASF license header. Given the missing headers, we will
address the issue and prepare RC4.

Thank you again for your careful review.

Best,
Xuan

Re: [VOTE] Release 1.2.0-incubating RC3 of Apache Texera (Incubating)

Posted by Ian Maxon <im...@apache.org>.
Hi,
Unfortunately and reluctantly, I think I have to vote -1. I went
through the release and almost everything is fine:

[X] Checksums and PGP signatures are valid
[X] LICENSE and NOTICE files are correct
[ ] All files have ASF license headers where appropriate
[X] Source tarball matches the Git tag
[X ] Docker Compose deploys successfully

I also compiled at the release tag and it's fine. I also ran the Iris
sample workflow locally and all was well.

However, I noticed almost all files under docs/ in the source don't
have a license header. These files weren't in 1.1.0. If my reading of
https://www.apache.org/legal/src-headers.html is correct, even though
these are documentation, they still need to have the right headers
like e.g. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/apache/asterixdb/refs/heads/master/asterixdb/asterix-doc/src/main/user-defined_function/udf.md
.
I think this slipped through because the automated check here:
https://github.com/apache/texera/blob/main/.licenserc.yaml is too
broad. Specific text or markdown files that are known to be test data
should be excluded from checks, but if they are just blanket
allowlisted then little things like this can slip through the cracks.
Other than that the release looks great. If I'm wrong about the
license headers being strictly necessary on the files under docs/ ,
then I'm happy to change my vote to +1, because it would be otherwise.

Other things I noticed:
- I don't think the NOTICE can be "YYYY and onwards". At least, I've
never seen it anywhere else (Apache or otherwise). It just needs to be
updated periodically to be the current year. I don't think it's a
blocker though.
