Triggered Builds Take Much Longer Than Scheduled Builds

It seems like triggered builds take substantially longer than those
which are run as scheduled?

Scheduled builds run in 12-14 minutes. I'm lucky if manually triggered
builds run in three to four times that long.

Is there a reason why this difference would be expected? If not, can
anyone suggest ways to investigate?
