[~iemejia] I'm not an expert on the topic, but can give you some more or less correct background: Spark already depends on hive, so we can't include it simply as a dependency. This is why a specific build of spark is needed for integration tests, where hive is left out of the build.

The last spark upgrade was done in HIVE-18436
