The best would be to get a backtrace from a coredump. Without it we can only
guess. This module from Jeff Trawick:

http://www.apache.org/~trawick/mod_prctl.c

will help you to get one on linux with 1.3.*. Load this module, set
CoreDumpDirectory to a server writable one and attach the gdb backtrace here.
