First of all, Ant 1.3 is old. Really, really old.

Which version of VAJ are you using?

>From the changelog for Ant 1.5.4:

* The Visual Age for Java tasks didn't work (at least for versions 3.0
  and higher).  Bug 10016.

I highly recommend that you give Ant 1.6.1 or at least 1.5.4 a try and for now
assume that this is a duplicate of one of the many VAJ bugs fixed for 1.5.4.
