I'm -1 on removing the permalink display.
It's handy because the end URL is important and I want to see what it looks like before and after I hit the publish button. If you think a broken link is confusing then make the link inactive until the entry is published, but I want to see the URL.

I have actually been against putting that link back for draft entries because I think it's confusing to entry authors to have a link on the page which is supposed to be broken.
I have also checked a couple other blog systems to see how they do it (MT and WordPress) and in both cases they do not provide a link to the entry until it is published. So IMO this is the more expected behavior and we should stick to it.
The *only* possible case that I could come up with where this would be handy is if someone was publishing multiple entries at the same time and wanted to interlink between them before actually marking them as published, but the use cases for that are very limited and so I think the current behavior is what's best for most users.

in any case, i don't really care about letting people see the url first as long as we do 2 things. first, make sure it's understood that the url is not active or available yet. second, make sure it doesn't make the UI worse.
one of the things i really hated about the way the url was displayed previously is that it was a big long url that took up a full line in the entry editor UI and it looked ugly and was useless to most people. so my thinking is that we should be trying to keep the UI as sleek and simple as possible and this is one of the elements that I think we can do without. if you can find a way to put it in so that it isn't obtrusive and ugly then i'm fine with that, but if not then i am -1 to adding it back.

For one thing, I want to see what the anchor will look like. But in general, when I publish things to the web I want to know what URL will be used to display them.
But that is a good point. No control. Once the anchor is created, it cannot be changed. I'd like to make it possible for users to control the anchor part of the URL. Most Roller bloggers learn how to come up with titles that look good in an anchor, but it's a trial and error affair. But I'm not proposing we do that now.
I use Roller daily and rely on this feature, so I'm going to restore the permalink display and make it inactive until the entry is published.

i guess you can do what you want, but i find that disappointing.
i think that putting that full url where it was before is a usability no-no and as i commented previously some of the other major blog software suites out there seem to agree because they don't do it either. i think that while decisions like these are small they are very important and IMO usability is probably Roller's biggest weakness now and it's decisions like these which have hurt us in the past. of course, it would help to get comments from real usability experts because usability is not my area of expertise, so this is jut my personal opinion.
i have no doubt that you find the feature useful and so will some other users, but my feeling is that our decisions should be intended to make things as simple and streamlined for *most* users as possible and in this case i think that putting the url back in there is ugly, confusing, and ultimately of little or no value to the majority of users. so if you want to put it back in i would strongly suggest putting it in the advanced section somewhere so that it's something that you only see if you are really seeking to deal with it. this makes the most sense also because if/when we provide a way for people to enter in their own entry anchors that is also something that should only be available in some kind of "advanced editing options" mode and not something that most users will care about, and the full url should probably be displayed in the same place.
