[jira] [Commented] (KAFKA-10796) USE OF BLACK HOLE RACIST
TERMINOLOGY

Andrew Otto commented on KAFKA-10796:
-------------------------------------
Hi, I'd like to learn moer. Why is BlackHole a racist term? The article you link to isn't saying that it is a racist term, just that some people once said it was, but then it goes on to present a nuanced view of how race and language are often tied together in complicated ways.
In this case, a black hole is named such because it is the 'color' black. My understanding of the usage in software is that you might put throw something away into a black hole and never get it back, as if you were launching matter into an astronomical black hole.

> Recently entire software industry started realizing how inadvertently software systems have been incorporating racist terminology. Besides master-slave and blacklist & whitelist, the usage of BlackHole is being flagged as racist term. Here is one of many posts @ [https://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Opinion/2008/0723/p09s01-coop.html] expressing the same.
> This bug report to raise the usage of BlackHole in Kafka current code base. Here are some (but not all) usages of BlackHole term in Kafka:
> 1. [PluginUtilsTest.java -> testPluginUrlsWithClasses()|https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/7d8e62b3b6d5a4f414211eb9cd5caa0e77d72cfb/connect/runtime/src/test/java/org/apache/kafka/connect/runtime/isolation/PluginUtilsTest.java]
> 2. [RecordBatchIterationBenchmark.java|https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/4b6d8da9fd5bbc7e90c062c4d2131437183349a0/jmh-benchmarks/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/jmh/record/RecordBatchIterationBenchmark.java]
