The Storm UI throws generic 500 error on "SASL Authentication not open" and other Thrift errors for calls via the UI. Investigate the https://raw.githubusercontent.com/apache/storm/master/storm-core/src/jvm/org/apache/storm/generated/Nimbus.java to see if a better return can be found.
